Does the name Alice bore you to tears?

Yes, we're still not sorted Blush. Time is marching on, I'm 39+4 now and DH is no nearer a decision.

I've abandoned my thoughts on not choosing something in the top 50 (due to being pissed off with my own super popular name) and was debating Alice. But is it really dull?

rhetorician I think the Wife of Bath was Alys now you come to mention it...

I did an English Lit degree, I'm liking this even more now. :)

I think it is lovely and not remotely dull, with the advantage of being neither too popular or too unusual.

Love it, my friend whi is like a mum to me is called Alice.

Alise is on my name list.

AnotherMincepie · 01/01/2012 10:30

I'm afraid I do find it a bit staid and dull, sorry.

Bluestocking · 01/01/2012 10:32

Alice is a beautiful name. Alys is nice too. I think the song is actually by the Eagles - not that it makes it any better!

MrsJohnDeere · 01/01/2012 10:34

I think it is lovely.

BornSicky · 01/01/2012 10:41

Henry II's mistress was called Alais. I like that spelling of it.

it is a classical name and i know two little girls called Alice, so not unpopular.

gazzalw · 01/01/2012 10:57

It's a beautiful name and the only one we know is the most lovely woman ever! Blonde and ethereal!

LadyCressida · 03/01/2012 19:10

I have an Alice. I picked it because I wanted something from Shakespeare (she's one of the Merry Wives of Windsor) and from Chaucer (It is the name of the Wife of Bath). (My name is also from both of those so it seemed perfect!)

We have pretty much only had positive comments about it, with the odd silly reference to the song, and also beware there is another about Alice the camel!

I think it's very sweet on a little girl, but will also work well at any age.

I haven't found any other babies called Alice yet but it's moving up in the top 50 - I think it was 40 something last year and apparently it was number 2 in popularity in the Times birth announcements last year though so it might be getting more popular again.

KitchenandJumble · 03/01/2012 19:18

It's a lovely name. I would love to use it for a future DD (if we ever have a DD), but DH's last name starts with S, so the name wouldn't flow very well. But I think Alice is a gorgeous name.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/01/2012 19:21

It's currently 43 which is a lot higher up the list than i would like, having a stupidly popular name myself.

However, the decision has been made and DD2 will be Alice Verity. All she's got to do now is make an appearance! Thank you for all the opinions. It's been a long long hard battle but this is the first name DH and I have both agreed on and I don't feel like he's 'won'

exoticfruits · 03/01/2012 19:23

Lovely name.

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 03/01/2012 19:35

My DD has Alice as a middle name. We toyed for hours about it being her first name, but in the end, went with a different FN. I love it just as much as her FN though

StealthPolarBear · 03/01/2012 19:38

Good choice! I have an Alice & suits her perfectly. Like shortening it to Ali too. And when she's grumpy we call her ali-gator.

smother · 04/01/2012 17:04

Envy I love this name and couldn't use it...

Loika · 04/01/2012 19:56

My name is Alice and my best friend at Uni (then Bridesmaid) is also Alice, We used to work together too, teachers couldn't cope and it just got worse, read on! :o

I hated it but then my maiden name started with an A, so I could have been AA, alcoholics Anon, Automobile Assoc etc! Instead my parents chose to use my middle name from birth, which is Louise. This caused confusion, the world cannot cope with you using your middle name! J.Edgar Hoover was lucky that his first initial wasn't A! Envy Unfortunatly hyphening would create Ali-Lou and its won't take long for someone to put "yar" on the end of that, making my teenage years more difficult. So I didn't. Just in case. :o Both my parents used their middle names, and as mine was a family name too, saw nothing wrong with this arrangement before anyone goes down the "Louise Alice" route! Its just an old fashioned method for when you were named after your parents etc etc!

Unfortunatly due to this naming arrangement and the time I was at school just as pop songs such as "Alice, whats the matter?" and "Who the f**k is Alice?" :(

In hindsight I quite like it and not using my first name, although a bind at the doctors and hospital, it does help me filter junk mail and cold calls! So long as your child can spell it and it isn't too "not dull" then any name is fine!

Alys is the welsh spelling and although it might seem cool/fun/interesting, differant spellings for the sake of it can cause unneeded hassle to! My married name is four letters but I have to spell it, pretty much every time and people still get it wrong!
