Baby due next Friday, just looking for some ideas as to what grandmas are called these days? DHs mum is happy with "mammar" (think that's a regional thing - we're from Notts - but my mum doesn't like it, she also says nan or gran makes her sound old!! I just used to call mine Grandma (name)!! Any more ideas??

Mine call their's Nanny xxx or Grandad xxx (where xxx is their Christian name).

Apart from initial shock from the Grandparents - it's worked out well and there's no confusion on who is who with our littlies.

Hulababy · 30/12/2011 21:19

DD calls my parents and DH's parents nana and grandad.

MrsAFlowerpot · 30/12/2011 21:20

We called ours nanny/nana first name and granddads called by their first names Confused

My DD has one grandma (DH's mum) a granddad (my dad - when she sees him, but that's another post!) and if my mum were here she would be nanny.

bigbluebump · 30/12/2011 21:22

Oma & Opa as well as Nana & Granpa

CrotchFlakes · 30/12/2011 21:22

Nanny and Grampy
Granny and Grandad

I just had Grandma A and Grandad A where A was where they lived (4 sets living in different towns)

BiltongandBoerewors · 30/12/2011 21:23

Grandma and Grumpy
Oma and Opa

mrspepperpotty · 30/12/2011 21:26

Love Grandma and Grumpy!

We have Granny / Grandpa and Nanny / Granada.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 30/12/2011 21:30

On my side DS called my dad Papa, my mum Nana, my Nana is Little Nana.

On DHs side they are collectively called -who?

MummyAbroad · 30/12/2011 21:38

My mum also refused to be "granny" or "nana" as it made her feel old, so she elected to be "G.V." which is short for "Granny Vivienne" (her first name obviously)

Everyone uses it and it works out fine except my 3.5 year old has started to ask "why is she called G.V.?"...and I'm not sure how to answerHmm

mrspepperpotty · 30/12/2011 21:38

Sorry should have been grandad not Granada!

Sirzy · 30/12/2011 21:39

Nana and Pops

greensnail · 30/12/2011 21:40

Grandma and Grandad / Granny and Grampy.

MummyAbroad · 30/12/2011 21:41

Shame, I liked "Granada" Grin

oreocrumbs · 30/12/2011 21:44

Grama and Grandad, and Nanna and Grandad, my Aunt is called YaYa by her GC which I think is lovely - but that came about naturally when DN was trying to say Grandma and could only pronounce YaYa, it stuck!

wigglesrock · 30/12/2011 21:45

Mine have a Nana and a Pa (from Grandpa), but Pa stuck and a Nana and Granda.

My Mum chose Nana - me thinks in my more cynical moments that she thought nana would be easy to say and therefore would be babys first word Grin, which of course it was Blush, bloody Nanas between all the hugs and chocolate Mummy never stood a chance Grin

snala · 30/12/2011 21:48

Nanny and Grandad for my parents.

Baa Baa and Paa Paa for PIL. Officially Grandma and Grandpa but DS1 made the names up so they have stuck Grin and now both dc call them that.

Bignorkz · 30/12/2011 21:59

Grin at grumpy!

I quite like nanna, my mum's name is Shirley, Nanna Shirley sounds okay I reckon. Problem is my great grandma was "nanna", she always had white hair as far as I remember, so make take some persuading...I guess DC will call her what it wants when it's old enough anyway!

I am supposed to be granny and dh his grampa. To dgs (2.5) we are dan and papa. Grin

Bignorkz · 30/12/2011 22:10

I like the "made up" ones resulting from children not being able to say words properly, will they still call them this when they're 18 I wonder!! Grin Also a nightmare to buy greetings cards I imagine! Grin

My dad is Grandad and my mum insists on being Grandma. It was ok when the kids were little, but they hate saying it now, and refer to her as nan to their mates.

JollySantaJackrum · 30/12/2011 22:16

I gave my parents and DP's parents the choice.

My parents are Granny and Granda, DP's parents are Nana and Pops.

I myself have two Grannys and a Granda. I think it's a regional (NE Scottish) thing - my mum and dad couldn't conceive of being called anything else.

rhetorician · 30/12/2011 22:17

DDs have 3 grannies poor loves (same-sex couple); one is 'nana', the others are Grandma S (her name) and Grandma J (her name); although the latter slightly competitively (she is biological grandma) claims full 'grandma' rights on cards etc (which irritates me slightly). But dd is used to this formulation, as she has 'mummy my name' and 'mummy dp's name', and sometimes just generic 'mummy'...
