Friends putting me off possible baby names

nervousexcitedandgrowing · 29/12/2011 08:40

We have all but decided on our shortlist of baby names for our first son but in a general conversation about baby names a friend of ours passed comment on how a couple of them could be turned into horrible nicknames, for example Ewan becoming Urine, which would be unfortunate as our surname is Byrnes (pronounced Burns). I had really fallen for this name but now Im having second thoughts. My husband thinks Im worrying about nothing. Honest opinions please please please!

I have never heard of a Ewan being called urine and there are a few here

tribpot · 29/12/2011 08:42

All names can be made into silly nicknames. As long as you're not planning to call the baby something completely stupid like Carpet or Third Degree, I think you'll be fine!

nervousexcitedandgrowing · 29/12/2011 08:45

Maybe my hormones are making me particularly sensitive :)

Thanks!

Ewan is a gorgeous name..it would have been our boy 's name every time..alas, 4 girls. Why someone would think of urine is beyond stupid. Stick to the name you love, don 't tell anyone else about it. People have a knack of being so idiotic when it comes to criticising baby names..keep it a secret! and your DH is right..you are worrying about nothing.

nervousexcitedandgrowing · 29/12/2011 08:55

I agree that it was a really stupid remark. Also, hopefully no child would think of this, and similarly, no other adult would make such an immature remark. Perhaps just an insensitive off day for my friend!

My brother is Ewan (Euan). We have NEVER called him Urine Hmm and as a family of 6 children we used every name possibly going whist growing up.

Don't mention baby names to anyone (apart from us)

3isamagicnumber · 29/12/2011 10:31

I like Ewan and the thought of calling him Urine or even linking it to that would never have entered my head! I agree with tribpot above, any name can be turned into some sort of horrid nickname if you try hard enough.
If you like it, stick with it.

CecilyP · 29/12/2011 10:59

While I have never heard of a Ewan being called urine, I feel I should warn you that with a name with so many alternative spellings, you should be prepared for peolple regularly spelling it differently from the spelling you have chosen. Also, he will spend his entire life spelling it out to people. The advantage is that it is only 4 letters.

pictish · 29/12/2011 11:01

Being in Scotland, I went to school with a good few Ewans and not one of them was ever called 'Urine'.
What a crock of shit.

cece · 29/12/2011 11:02

DO NOT discuss names with anyone in real life.

nervousexcitedandgrowing · 29/12/2011 11:15

This all helps! I should have said that at no point did I tell anyone that we were considering this name. I just remarked that it was quite nice when it was suggested to me among others. So no one around us is any wiser. Perhaps this is why I began to worry, as I hadnt sounded it out to anyone.

We are also in Scotland where I think Ewan is the most common spelling: Ewan McGregor :)

One of my pals was horrified at every name I suggested for the kids.
She IS a twat though, with the imagination of a toilet roll tube.

I didn't really give a shit about other people's opinions on our name choices tbh.

eandemum · 29/12/2011 11:22

I have a (13 yr old) Euan - never called urine - to my knowledge!!
His little sister calls him Yu-Yu and we often call him you-ey.

I might have changed the spelling to Ewan though if I had to name him again!

On his 1st b'day we had a cake made specially for him (had more money then!?) and went to collect iy - it had 'Happy 1st Buan'
was told just to pick the extra icing off the B to make it into an E Hmm

And also never tell others yr choice - people will always say if they don't like it!

mrsshears · 29/12/2011 12:03

ignore ignore ignore,Ewan is a lovely name.
We made the mistake of discussing our names with family over christmas and our girls name, primrose, was well and truly slated,it has'nt made a jot of difference to myself and dh.

CecilyP · 29/12/2011 12:05

I am in Scotland too, but only mentioned the spelling because I had a friend at playgroup who was really uppity that people kept spelling her son Ewan's name 'wrong' when she had chosen what she called the most usual spelling. Can't actually remember how she spelt it and don't know whether it was the most usual.

aswellasyou · 29/12/2011 12:20

Does it matter if you have to spell it though? My sister and I have unusual/unheard of names with a double barelled (but unhyphenated surname) and have to spell them all the time. It's never caused a problem in the slightest. How long does it take to say a few letters?

I really like the name Ewan and don't think it would be converted to urine by his peers. Some people seem to look for a negative aspect to every name. I especially don't understand the obsession with initials needing to not spell a word. Confused Most importantly, if you and your partner are happy with it, stick to Ewan.

ThePickledGerbil · 29/12/2011 12:23

People love to rubbish your ideas. My gran is trying to put me off Oscar as she says in her day it was slang for penis. (Didn't stop her naming me something 2 letters off vagina though Hmm ).

My DH is also convinced a Max will get called Tampax.

I went to school with a few Ewans and never heard urine. Even if some inventive little shit child came up with that I doubt it would stick, it's not that quick or easy to say and it's just not that dirty/naughty!

AteAWholePacketOfBiccys · 29/12/2011 12:28

NEVER tell other people what name you like. No matter what you pick they will say 'urrrgghhh no I don't like that name I went to school with someone really fat, ugly and smelly called that'
Just tell everyone when the baby is born and they will love the name.

tribpot · 29/12/2011 15:38

Plus, you can't win. I went to school with some called Nelly, because his surname was Nelson. In fact there's a whole host of them - I was having to try to remember to call one of them by his first name when I was chatting with him on FB as I don't know if anyone still calls him Chappie twenty- years after we left school (surname Chapman).

englishmummyinwales · 29/12/2011 19:09

I have a Iwan (which is pronounced the same - Welsh spelling) and I've never heard of anyone calling him urine - how peculiar, I can't really see how she came to that conclusion.

Oh and I can confirm that most people will automatically spell it Ewan, which I call the Ewan McGregor effect, even here in Wales, when only one person has ever said to me 'is that with an I?'. But as someone else said, it's not really a bother to have to spell it out.

And of course, I think it is a beautiful name and that you have exquisite taste....!

humblehippo · 29/12/2011 19:19

Ewan is nice and urine would not cross my mind! It is perfectly "normal" name, nothing especially teasable. Ignore!

Also LOVE your name and can't imagine anyone adapting it to the nn you mention.

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THAT??? Would NEVER once think of saying anything remotely negative to a pregnant lady discussing names in RL, what's the point??

starshaker · 29/12/2011 23:52

My little boy is called harrison, harry for short and i kept being told he would get called harry hoofter which is slang for poof/gay. I didnt care and i love his name. Who cares what other people think or say, just go with what you like
