What do people think of the name Albert?

I like the old names that are becoming popular again but I don't want the name to be common. We have an Albert in the family. Old and unusual but I'm not sure... What do you think? And if you hate it can you suggest any alternatives?

Vote yes here Grin

MudAndGlitter · 24/12/2011 11:44

Yes love it. Also love Albie as a nn.

Oubliette0292 · 24/12/2011 11:54

Love it - it was my grandpa's name (although his nn was Arthur for reasons I still don't understand).

Commutinghell · 24/12/2011 12:09

Ah thank you Smile I'm so pleased people like it. Me and my sisters like Albie or Bertie as a nn, DH prefers Bert. I'm dreading telling my mum that we're even considering it. Blush

Like it :) especially Bertie as a nn. Excellent choice!

KittieCat · 24/12/2011 12:13

I absolutely love it, too. My all time hero, Jarvis Cocker, called his son Albert, which makes me love it more.

MudAndGlitter · 24/12/2011 12:21

My mum hates DDs name but loves the nn and everyone calls her that anyway. Just don't tell her until he's born!

Commutinghell · 24/12/2011 12:28

I feel like I should break it to her early... We find out next week if we're having a boy or a girl and I'm thinking I might tell her over the next couple of days that we're thinking of it, that will give her chance to get used to the idea just incase it is a boy... We're thinking of using her name if it's a girl so it seems reasonable but I just know she's going to hate it Sad

I wouldn't tell your mother or anyone else for that matter (apart from us lot, clearly Xmas Grin) about what you may or may not call bump. Once you open up the conversion they will feel like it's their place to offer suggestions or comment on ie: Albert. Which you may be ok with if they like Albert, but if they don't...!!!

Bertie is super cute as a nn.

jaffacakehips · 24/12/2011 13:12

Also you tell everyone the sex of the baby, then the name...where's the surprise...but that's just me!!

I know a Robert who's Bert?!?

LaFilleSurLePont · 24/12/2011 13:47

I hate it. It's a perfectly respectable name,but I detest Bert/Bertie It has an ugly,harsh sound.

LaFilleSurLePont · 24/12/2011 13:48

I think Albert is becoming relatively common too.I wouldn't describe it as unusual.

Commutinghell · 24/12/2011 13:53

Yeah good point about not telling people. That's interesting to hear that it's becoming common, I've never heard of anyone under the age of 60 called Albert Wink

DS middle name is Albert
1st is Edwin! Totally on your wavelength.
We would have done Albert 1st but it was recently deceased DH fathers middle name so we kept it middle

BastedTurkey · 24/12/2011 14:48

Love it and the nns

Commutinghell · 24/12/2011 14:48

Edwin is a nice name. We also have a great uncle Wilfred, my sister and DH would love to call our baby that, I prefer Albert.

My DH loves this name and would like us to consider it if we have another boy - I like it, love Albie or Bertie, but not sure we could pull it off. If you like it go for it!!

We didn't plan to tell anyone the name of our DS before he was born but my mum kept slating all the names I liked! Eventually I told her what we'd chosen after she'd gone on a rant about the name I loved most of all - she quickly changed her tune and said it was a lovely name Xmas Grin

Montsti · 24/12/2011 15:16

Albert is ok but LOVE Bertie - think you should go for it! Don't tell anyone as whatever name you choose people will be critical...

Ihatepeas · 24/12/2011 16:42

Only boys name dh and I can agree on. I really like it esp the nicknames. Dh loves it. Agree though Dm is going to be very unsure.

LaFilleSurLePont · 24/12/2011 17:18

I know of two under 5s called Albert, and it seems to be popular on Mumsnet.

maydaychild · 24/12/2011 20:42

These sort of names
Albert
Stanley
Ralph
are popular in certain areas. But still nowhere near the Joseph Oliver Daniel stakes

Greenshirt · 24/12/2011 21:11

My dads middle name and I would have used it for our DS but then would have used DH's dads middle name which is Walter [yuck].

Love Albert, my stepdad is Albert, he is a wonderful man, there is something very dignified and gentle about that name.
It is also very British, but at the same time very European, continental, with such name boy/ man will not be out place anywhere.SmileWink

Theas18 · 24/12/2011 23:47
