I have a Harriet so I'm a bit biased :) But if it's a choice between Hattie which is too nicknamey for me, or Cecily, then I'd go for Cecily.

AnotherMincepie · 14/12/2011 19:10

I like Hattie and would assume it was a nickname for Harriet (you'd be telling people "no, it's not short for Harriet quite a lot!)

Cecily is a bit prim and lispy for me, although I do like Cecilia.

MunchingNoPickles · 14/12/2011 19:16

Cant say Hattie grows on me but Harriet, Cecilia and Celia are lovely as are the 3 children i know named as them.

hohohoshedittant · 14/12/2011 19:17

I don't like Cecily.

Hattie is nice, but I'd have it as a nn for Harriet or something else if you don't like Harriet.

I have a Hattie (as a nn for Harriet) so am also biased, but agree with Gwendoline that if the choice is just Hattie rather than as a nn, then I would also go with Cecily, which is such a pretty name!

olliesmummy234 · 14/12/2011 19:34

Hattie - as a little Hat? Hmm... not sure.

Cecily is lovely, elegant and a proper name imo.

Greenshirt · 14/12/2011 19:34

I have a Hattie Hope.Hattie on birth certificate.Strangely,Cecily was on our list for DC3.She was a girl, but we went with Felicity. She calls herself CeCe.[She is 2!]

BuntyPenfold · 14/12/2011 19:35

I like Hattie, not sure about Harriet though, as I always think of harridan for some reason.
Do you like Henrietta?

shesparkles · 14/12/2011 19:42

If you go for Hattie, you'd better hope she never has a weight problem...I'm not being nasty, but I think you have to think of all the possible rhyming words with names too....Name her Harriet, you can shorten it to Hattie if you like, and as she grows up she can make a choice for herself....Not keen on Cecily, but Celia and Cecilia are lovely

LaTristesse · 14/12/2011 20:30

Of the 2 I prefer Cecily.

tammytoby · 14/12/2011 22:16

I really don't like Hattie - agree it sounds like a little hat and it does indeed rhyme with Fattie.... Harriett is ok but I find it very harsh und unfeminine, sorry.

I like Cecily or Cecilia very much - these names also work in other languages, whereas Hattie sounds very silly in German or French imo.

JB22 · 14/12/2011 22:17

They are both wonderful names! But a little biased because we have a Hettie. So nearly went for Hattie but as shesparkles points out, it rhymes very easily and we were worried it would make her an easy playground target for nasty naming games!!

MaggieAtwood · 15/12/2011 12:12

I prefer Harriet or Henrietta nn Hattie to Cecily but I would have to go for Cecily over Hattie as BC names.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 15/12/2011 13:32

I don't get the obsession with rhyming. If you knocked out every name that rhymed with something you'd have nothing left.

shesparkles · 15/12/2011 16:37

I think of the possible rhyming thing because it's something the less pleasant children in a school playground will pick up on , that's all

MatLeaveForever · 16/12/2011 15:30

Agree Gwen - we'd all have to call our kids Orange to avoid a rhyme! Xmas Grin

ATruthFestivelyAcknowledged · 16/12/2011 15:32

I love Cecily. It was top of my list if we had a girl. DP can't stand it though so not sure if it's a 'marmite name'

MamaLazarou · 17/12/2011 14:57

They are both really lovely, but I think Cecily is slightly prettier.

FetchezLaVache · 17/12/2011 14:58

I really like both- sorry, that's not much help!

Fo0ffysFestiveShmooffery · 17/12/2011 15:03

Probably prefer Cecily.

OliviaMumsnet · 17/12/2011 15:05

Prefer Cecily though love Hattie but prefer as part of Harriet imho

ShengdanRoad · 17/12/2011 15:33

Hattie/Harriet is so pretentious.

CecilyP · 17/12/2011 16:02

Cecily - obviously!

KitchenandJumble · 17/12/2011 21:26

I adore Hattie as a nickname for Harriet. I wouldn't use Hattie as a given name though.

Cecily is nice as well. I prefer Cecelia, but Cecily is also very nice.
