Any opinions on this for our dd? I want to name her something unusual and slightly hippyish but not too bizarre. Atm I love this name but I keep changing my mind, damn hormones!

TubbyDuffs · 27/11/2011 14:21

I know a Seren, and I love the name.

Bellie · 27/11/2011 14:21

I like it, but it is popular here at the moment - there are 2 in ds's swimming lesson of 12 people!!

smartyparts · 27/11/2011 14:28

I like it, it's lovely. I know one, aged 2.

Have pondered why the Beckhams didn't use it instead of seven ffs.

BikeRunSki · 27/11/2011 14:33

Lovely, I guess you know it is Welsh for "star". I don't know any, but I am not in Wales.

Cutelittlecatlover · 27/11/2011 14:55

Thanks everyone, I should clarify I'm only 21 weeks pg so theres plenty of time to change my mind yet but we know we're having a girl and so far this is the only name dh and I agree on!

Bellie may I ask, how old are the 2 in your son's swimming class? I'm very surprised to hear that its popular, I've only ever met one!

CEDR · 27/11/2011 15:00

I like it, never met one before! Depends a little on sur-name obviously!

Marinn · 27/11/2011 15:07

I think it's in the top 5 given names in Wales but outside of Wales pretty unusual.

I like it a lot and lovely meaning too.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 27/11/2011 15:09

In the immortal words of Tom Jones... It's not unusual... Well in Wales it isn't, I know loads of Serens, mostly in the 0-5 age group.

Bellie · 27/11/2011 15:38

ds is 2.8 - his swimming class covers from 2 - 3. We are no where near Wales!

(although the parents may have Welsh heritage, but not obviously iyswim)

NewsClippings · 27/11/2011 15:49

It's one of these names which sounds a bit different... the first time. It's a pretty name but perhaps getting a bit faddy now. Serena is a less popular alternative.

ViviPru · 27/11/2011 16:30

I love it but its cropping up more and more on these boards. I think its going to be extremely ubiquitous in a few years in England too. I like the alternative 'Serin'

CupOfGoodCheer · 27/11/2011 16:35

Its a nice enough name, but I'm from Wales, where there are hundreds

broccolitrees · 27/11/2011 17:03

if this one is a girl, we are calling her seren, as i love it Smile.... just need to convince dh that we are calling seren Grin

broccolitrees · 27/11/2011 17:05

what???!!! i never realised it was as popular, til i read the rest of the thread Confused i have loved it for years - way before it became popular it seems!

Cutelittlecatlover · 27/11/2011 18:23

Serenas quite a pretty name but I went to school with one and she was a nasty little bitch not very nice so that names been ruined for me really! I've never heard of Serin before but I like it a lot so thanks for that ViviPru.

Its definitely still on my list but I will be keeping an eye on the baby names to see how popular it gets between now and April, I'd hate for our dd to be one of 5 in her class with the same name. Of course it helps that we are nowhere near Wales!

OP posts:
Carlitawantsababy · 27/11/2011 18:55

It is fairly popular, I looked it up because my sister liked it. It was %23137 in 2010 with 423 babies called Seren.

LingDiLong · 27/11/2011 20:20

Yes, it's popular in Wales. If you want to go for a different hippyish welsh name how about Enfys (pronounced Envis, Welsh for Rainbow)? I also noticed a 'Cariad' (pronounced carry-ad, Welsh for Love) on Cbeebies the other day which I've NEVER heard of.

girliefriend · 27/11/2011 20:27

There is one in my dds class (age 5yo) but until I met her I had never met another Seren, I really like it.

salvadory · 27/11/2011 20:55

I'm in manchester and know of 2 under 2. I like it and fwiw the 2 I know have mums who know each other so think one inspired the other.

BibiBelle · 27/11/2011 20:56

It's lovely Smile None near us but we are in the north of Scotland Grin

SoupDragon · 27/11/2011 20:59

I know 3. One of them is mine, one is the younger sister of one of her friends and one is in the year above her. I don't care though :) She is unlikely to be one of several in her class (we're not in Wales)

southeastastra · 27/11/2011 21:03

never heard of it ever, reminds me of the serengeti not that i know what that is

lostinwales · 27/11/2011 21:03

I love the name, it was one of my favourites 12 years ago when I was pregnant for the first time but my very good friend got a cat and called her Seren which changed my mind in the end, well that and he's a boy, very good friend his godmother though! Grin Love Enfys too, I imagine there won't be as many of those about.

peggyblackett · 27/11/2011 23:09

Love it. I know one, aged one.

MelinaM · 28/11/2011 00:12

I think it's becoming quite popular too ...I live part-time in South Wales and know of two, aged 3, the other 6 months.

I can't say that I like or dislike it, prefer Serena thoughSmile
