I love this name, and have always wanted to use it for a DD. I'm not keen on unusual names and having grown up with a really difficult name to spell I wanted to use one that everyone knows.

However I'm now a bit unsure because some people I've mentioned it too have said it sounds old-fashioned (and it's true they are dying out, it's more our generation) and DP went as far to say "what kind of a name is Amanda" (although he seems keen on ethnic names from his country, which I really wouldn't want especially as a first name)

Any thoughts?

Very nice name, like it a lot.

lisianthus · 26/11/2011 13:24

Lovely name, very elegant

tiredteddy · 26/11/2011 13:25

I think it is old fashioned in a good way, not weird or too unusual but classic. Go for it if it's the name you love.

Hersetta · 26/11/2011 13:25

Like Amanda but hate, hate hate mandy. I couldn't take the risk that it wouldn't be shortened.

NunTheWiser · 26/11/2011 13:26

Lovely and unusual at the moment. I know an Amanda who is lovely!

Fo0ffysFestiveShmooffery · 26/11/2011 13:26

It's true there were quite a few in the 70s/ early 80s but I think unlike some it has a timeless quality. Very pretty name.
Don't like the shortened Mandy/Mandi/Manda though.

lisianthus · 26/11/2011 13:26

Shorten to Manda, if you don't like Mandy. I know someone who does this.

Montsti · 26/11/2011 13:33

It's ok but really hate Mandy and Manda too which I assume she would become. If you're ok with the nns then go for it!

You could look at other names also popular in that (my!) generation but not overused now such as Victoria, Jennifer, Louise/a, Helen/a, Lucinda, Elizabeth, Georgina, Rebecca etc..not necessarily my favourite names but might fit your bill..

Otherwise of course there are quite a few current top 50 names that might work...

ElmoFan · 26/11/2011 13:33

My name is Amanda , never been shortened to mandy thankfully . if you like it , then go for it Smile

likethemoon · 26/11/2011 13:43

Thanks everyone! :-) I'm ok with the nn's, although I would prefer it if people were to call her by the full name.

I'm an Amanda too - and apart from a brief time in 6th form being called Randy Mandy (which was NOT justified let me add!), I've always been called by my full name.

likethemoon · 26/11/2011 15:23

Randy Mandy! I didn't think of that one! A friend of mine also mentioned that she could be teased because the word "man" is in there... although tbh kids find a way to make fun of almost any name! So do you like your name (apart from that little blip!) Amanda?

I think it's lovely, and would have been happy to consider it for DDs name until DH pointed out that he has 2 Amandas in his catalogue of ex's! Go for it!

Ihavewelliesbutitssunny · 26/11/2011 17:04

It is a nice name but quite old fashioned imo. I think the youngest Amandas around now are in their early twenties so not ready for a revival yet.

smartyparts · 26/11/2011 17:11

Because it's a mum's generation name, people don't seem to like it as much as granny type names, iyswim.

It's a perfectly nice name and I bet it will come back into vogue along with Sarah, Clare, Michelle,Joanna etc. Or, everyone I went to school with!

Mandy, however, is not good.

MatLeaveForever · 26/11/2011 18:23

Yes I do like my name now, as a child I decided it had too many vowels but I'm happy with the number of vowels now!
The 'man' is my name didn't bother me, although my married surname also has a 'man' in it which my parents couldn't have predicted at the time. I've only met a couple of other Amanda's all about my age. So there will probably only be one in her class but that's no bad thing.
Good luck whatever name you decide.

CharlieBoo · 26/11/2011 19:52

My neighbour Is called Amanda, Mandy for short and the gets called MAAAAAND!! Not good

NewsClippings · 26/11/2011 20:20

I like it and I know an Amanda who is never called Mandy.

likethemoon · 26/11/2011 23:33

I'm going to go with it :) It's really encouraging that many of you like it too. Am intrigued why so many people are anti-Mandy though!

NotnOtter · 26/11/2011 23:35

Lovely

ceeceeanne · 27/11/2011 07:56

I am amazed so many like it! Very eighties!!

likethemoon · 27/11/2011 12:42

ceecee, I've had a lot of comments about it being eighties but I'm going to go with it anyway - especially as it has been approved by the MN jury!:)

My best friend is Amanda and she's never been Mandy. Sometimes Ammy, mostly Amanda.

AberdeenAngusina · 27/11/2011 14:40

I know a 16 year old Amanda, who's known by her full name. It's lovely.

CEDR · 27/11/2011 14:56

I like Amanda, but it can also be Mandy, Manda, Amy, Mad, MAddie etc
