Alfie - too faddy?

ColourMeWithChaos · 20/11/2011 01:08

Am currently 34 weeks with DS7 and the only name me and DH can agree on is Alfie (maybe Alfred).
Do you think its a bit faddy? It does seem to be quite popular here at the moment Middle names would probably be Richard Samuel.
Our other DCs are called:
Henry (Harry)
Johnathan (Jack)
William (Will)
Alexander (Alex)
Thomas (Tom)
George (currently called Goo!)

Any other suggestions - we like quite classic names that will age well and work whatever the boys decide to be. Am just a bit worried Alfie will become dated quite quickly!

I think it's become v faddy - as have Archie and Charlie.

nooka · 20/11/2011 02:40

I think Alfred is a great name (but I do have a vested interest) however Alfie has become very popular and might well be quite dating. Plus you already have an 'A' in the family and with so many boys you might use initials a fair bit (I'm one of only four an my family did).

Could you use Richard as the first name? It's also a great traditional name but much less popular.

startail · 20/11/2011 02:46

Peter
Robert
David
Fredrick
I too think Alfie will date and it's a bit cutesy

Catslikehats · 20/11/2011 03:06

It is certainly very popular, although "Alfred" could hardly be described as faddy.

It may however date (but the vast majority of names do). My Dsis went to register her Alfie 6 years ago, feeling very original only to be told by the registrar that he was the 5th Alfie she had registered that day Shock Perhaps the sort of info you should keep to yourself!

HauntedHengshanRoad · 20/11/2011 04:08

Well, it's the name my 16-year-old sister is planning for the DS she's currently pregnant with...

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 20/11/2011 08:05

Don't do it - it's going to date terribly. The backlash has already started.

And congrats on your 7th DS!!

ColourMeWithChaos · 20/11/2011 08:55

I think the consesus is that Alfie will date quickly!
Out of the names suggested we could only use Frederick because all the others are either mine or DH's brothers/brother in laws. I love David as well - wanted it for my earlier DSs!
Any more suggestions? Starting to worry about this because I wanted to get everything sorted before Christmas (I have a tendency to give birth two weeks early!)

Watch out for the initials with those middle names, especially if your surname starts with E!

thousandDenier · 20/11/2011 11:36

the name you are looking for is Septimus.

ragged · 20/11/2011 11:42

I quite like Alfred and nn would have been Freddy or Al for short (Alfie doesn't do anything for me). I use to work with a lovely Fred only a few years older than me (Alfred full name).

Alfie is just such a name of "this" generation, my friend has one who is nearly 7yo, she tries so hard to choose unusual names, too, and it was quite unusual almost 7 years ago.

I think Septimus would be Way Cool. (honest!)
Elias, Raymond, Isaac, Edgar, Zachary, Barnaby, Timothy, James, Jacob?

NewsClippings · 20/11/2011 11:47

Sebastian, Gabriel, Nathaniel, John, Nicholas, Oliver, Isaac, Daniel, Lawrence, Edward, Felix

Bert2e · 20/11/2011 11:50

It's a little boy's name not a man's name :-( And very, very faddy.

MelinaM · 20/11/2011 12:43

Yes, and also very canine too! Do like Alfred thoughSmile

ColourMeWithChaos · 20/11/2011 16:07

I think Septimus would be pretty awesome too but DH has said no :(
We both like:
Edward
James
Timothy
Nicholas
Oliver
Daniel

Any more ideas?
(Teddingtons we hadn't even noticed that! Thankfully our surname doesn't start with an E!)

Frederick definitely leaps out at me as the 'obvious' name for number 7 (traditional with a great nn) but it's my boy name and it's already dreadfully popular so I don't feel I can encourage you to use it Grin

Your next list has some lovely names on it OP! I think any of those would work. (Except perhaps Tim and Tom...)

JobCarHouseNoBaby · 20/11/2011 17:19

My friend's brothers have cool names - Frederick (Freddy) and Albert (Albie). Both are super cool rock dudes and are generally known by their nicknames.

Albie is close to Alfie but possibly not quite as faddy?

nooka · 20/11/2011 17:22

Nicholas

Edward and Oliver also very popular right now, James too close to Jack, Timothy is great, but Tim was to 'matchy' with Tom, and if you are using Samuel for a middle name then I don't think Daniel really works.

Nicholas is a great name, traditional but not very many around right now. Int eh same vein what about Micheal?

ColourMeWithChaos · 20/11/2011 17:24

Hadn't thought of the Tim/Tom dilemma!
Frederick does seem to be quite popular at the moment but its so nice!
Think the front runners are Edward and Nicholas at the moment.

Richard, Sebastian, Benjamin, Samuel, Matthew, Dominic can all be suitably nicknamed!

ginaribena · 22/11/2011 20:38

Alfie is a cute name and I know some lovely Alfies - but there are hundreds around our way so if you don't want a common name I'd avoid.

changer22 · 22/11/2011 20:41

I love Alfred but not so keen on Alfie.

I have a thing about siblings having the same initials too so I would avoid it. I love Edward from your list. I love Eddie and Ted.

Congratulations! 7 DSs - wow!

Lilyloo · 22/11/2011 20:42

How about Oscar , Tobias (Toby) , Charles (Charlie) but do love Alfie myself

lollystix · 22/11/2011 22:46

Edward good with your others. What about Ben?

reallacecurtains · 24/11/2011 10:10

very popular around here, I would repeat what others have said about going for the fully fledged Alfred. How about Arthur with Art for short, now that's a much more sophisticated choice!

MildredH · 24/11/2011 23:22

Alfie is very of the moment- names of your other children are really lovely though.

I'm always put off Edward as it could so easily be Eddie.. although you could encourage 'Ted' instead which is very sweet..
