MILs response to name. I may be overreacting?

Our baby boy was born 3days ago. We named him Kade which is a Scottish name we've always liked. We live in Scotland and dad is Scottish.

MIL has made it clear she doesn't like it, thinks it sounds chavvy and said something like 'someone called Kade would never be a physics graduate and would be pre judged by teachers'

I know my hormones are currently crashing but I'm really really upset by this. It's made me feel awkward about his name and that people will all hate it. I think it's insensitive of her not to have kept her opinion to herself and now I know she feels that way I know she'll be cringing every time she has to say his name and I don't want that for him. I've always thought a lot of her so I guess it feels more hurtful. But again maybe I'm just being too hormonal.

Is it really a horrible chavvy name? To me your personality and upbringing puts your name into the context of who you are but maybe other people don't think like that. Any thoughts?

How much does your dh like his name? If he isn't that keen on it you could always try the 'well at least I didn't choose (dh name)!'. [grin

Not so good if it is a name you like though...]

I have heard it used before and not because it's Scottish. I too think she's got it confused with Kaden or Cadence etc, which aren't chav names, but I think they are quite 'trendy' in a sense.

She's entitled to her opinion certainly, but it's not something she should've expressed to you.

Never heard of it. Lovely name (which is unusual I think for a name that is new to most).

It was a really rude and unnecessary thing to say. She should have just kept her thoughts to herself and most likely she would have soon grown to like the name as she gets to know your DS.

Congrats and try not to take any notice but I can understand you being a bit upset by the remark. Personally I like Kade but anyway it's you and your DH opinion that counts!

In my opinion, the one who goes through labour gets the last word. Did she choose her children's names or did her MIL? Point this out to her and then tell her to butt out!

I have a Kaden, almost always Kade. We love it. Only had negative responses here actually. It is a cool name. My Kade will be whatever he wants to be, his name will not be a hinderance, 'new sounding' names are more and more common place these days, normal names could stifle a creative child going by that logic. ;)
