Boys name with a historical feel

Ok ladies 37 weeks and we cant decide!

Have girls name ready to rock, but boys....

We would like something that either:

Has some sort of meaning to our lives
Maybe some one who has done something great in the world
History/Greek maybe something with a bit of omph!

We got engaged at a lovely Restaurant called "Edwins" At first I wasn't sure, but now kinda like it? I would probably call him Eddy, but nice to think when he's older there is a grown up name there if he wishes to use it.

Saw Sarah Beanies little one called Raffety - quite like that?

I also like:
Hugo, Monty,Archie but Hubbie not sure.

Any thoughts ladies??

How about -Roman, Darwin, Inigo, Albert, Marcus?

meditrina · 04/11/2011 18:49

For a historical feel, my mind went into the gutter and I came up with Jasper (oh, Sir!)

On a Greek theme: Perseus (nn Percy, like Jackson), Hector, Lysander, Ares, Pavlos, Lysander, Alexander, Phillip, Dionysus

Other historic: Ug, Stig, Wulfric, Edward, William, Arthur, Uther, Pendragon, Ruprecht, Geoffrey, Kenelm, Nelson, Wilberforce, Marlowe

Archie is very popular, if that bothers you.

Julius?

I rather like Edwin, and the story behind it for you.

Montsti · 05/11/2011 08:19

Sounds as though you want a slightly unusual name so would avoid Archie. Absolutely love Montgomery nn. Monty which has an historical feel.

Paris (obviously not so great now because of Ms Hilton)
Troy (reminds me of a Porn star but maybe you'll like it...)
Achilles
Ulysses (maybe a bit OTT)
Odysseus (maybe a bit OTT)
Hercules (hmm..)

Lots of names on here

FairyArmadillo · 05/11/2011 10:19

I like the idea of Edwin with its special meaning.

Towndon · 05/11/2011 10:50

Edwin is nice :)

LadyMontdore · 05/11/2011 10:56

I like Edgar more than Edwin (a bit 'stronger') and also Edwy (but I think the King Edwy may have met a sticky end).

Aethelwuf

I know of several Hugos, Monties and lots of Archies - but they are nice names.

tangledweb · 05/11/2011 11:08

Edmund?

Alec, Hugo and Hector are also strong names.

mathanxiety · 05/11/2011 20:09

Instead of Rafferty (which always reminds me of 'seven old ladies were locked in the lavatory') how about Raftery? Anthony Raftery (Antoin O Raifteiri) was an Irish poet, 'the last of the wandering bards', and a major voice in 18th and early 19th century Irish poetry.

There are some fab names from Classical history/mythology, but it depends what you think you could get away with on a daily basis (unless, of course, you want to stick with Alexander or Marcus):

Themistocles (founder of the Athenian navy)
Demosthenes (Athenian statesman and orator who stood up to Alexander the Great's father)
Thucydides (Athenian general and historian)
Hector (crown prince of Troy in the Iliad)
Astyanax (Hector's son... although he does come to a sticky end)
Neoptolemus (Achilles' son)
Cato (two Roman statesmen, both considered awe-inspiring republicans, but there's the Clouseau problem, I suppose)
Cicero (very famous Roman politician and writer - would be cool to revive his name as a first name)

Mollydoggerson · 05/11/2011 22:52

Peter, there are no baby Peters

DilysPrice · 06/11/2011 18:42

Athelstan, definitely Athelstan.

wildstrawberryplace · 06/11/2011 18:44

Leofric!

sonniebonnie · 06/11/2011 22:18

Quentin

Agree that Archie is very popular round here.
