four in a class - really?

I've noticed on here that many people seem to dread the possibility that their child may be one of 'four or five' in a class. Just thinking about this when my friend showed me the list for her dd's reception class intake the other day. Of thirty children there were only two names replicated, each with two children with the name (one of these being Ruby, which was the most popular name for the year anyway). When I was at primary school in the seventies when there were probably fewer names used overall there was only one duplicated name in a class of 20 girls (Claire). So, just out of interest, what names are there more than one of in your dc's classes and are there often '4 or 5' of one name or is this actually an extremely rare occurrence?!

I know three adult Steve Smiths - very confusing!

Agree that life would be easier if we all made more use of ALL the names available and not all choose the same top 20 or so.... will bear this in mind when naming our next bump!

DigOfTheStump · 10/10/2011 19:43

DS - he was the only one in the entire primary school, one of two in secondary. His name is a rare-ish Scots name.

DD - has none in her class, though there are others in different age groups in her school. Well known name, but been around for centuries.

3x Finley/Finlay in reception class but it is the most popular name in the town we live in, I know at least 10 all under 8!!!!!

There were 3 Emmas in my sisters class.

I think there are 2 Alexes in DS class, which surprised me.

SoylentClean · 10/10/2011 20:34

There were 4 of my name in my infant school class, then at high school I was one of too many to count. In my final year math class there were 6 of us in a class of about 25. Madness!

BeeBread · 10/10/2011 20:35

There were 4 Kathryn/Katherine/Catherines in my senior school class of 30-ish in the 1980-1990s, and always plenty of Sarah/Helen/Emmas too.

I don't think I ever minded that much but I am reasonably keen for my DSs not to be in the same position.

JulesJules · 10/10/2011 20:41

My dds- 2 Emilys, 2 Emmas, 2 Ellies, 2 Jacks, 2 Noahs, 2 Alfies, 2 Laurens.

In my class at school there were 2 Katharines (but spelt differently), 4 Debbie/Debra/Deborahs, 2 Sarahs, 2 Garys.

ivykaty44 · 10/10/2011 20:46

There where several Samantha's, I think about 4 in total

when my dd1 started nursery there where 5 mums with the same name Grin and one of the mums gave her daughter the same name...

Psammead · 10/10/2011 21:04

I once taught a class with two Laras, two Annas, two Lenas, a Lina and.... a Tessa Grin

That was the whole class.

mummyosaurus · 10/10/2011 21:16

2 Ryans and 2 James in DS class.

2 james in DDs class too.

bigbluebump · 10/10/2011 21:19

My sister teaches a class with three Jacks, two of which share the same surname initial!

Am now staying clear of the top 100 names in the hope of avoiding this for my children Smile.

mathanxiety · 10/10/2011 21:46

Emily Sz, Emily Sk, Emily I, and Emilie L were in DS's class throughout primary.

DD1 had four Michaels in her year.

DD4 has three Rachels.

The year before DD3 had 5 Jacks.

cece · 10/10/2011 21:51

I know of a class with 3 Daniels, 2 Olivers, 2 Josephs and 2 Finleys.

Years ago I had a class of 27 children. In that class I had;
2 Rebeccas
2 Bens (who had almost identical last names too)
3 Pauls
3 Davids...

That was tricky that year...

ellesabe · 10/10/2011 22:08

I have taught classes with 4 Daniels, 4 Freyas and 3 Bens.

workshy · 10/10/2011 22:15

I'm Karen and in the early 80s when I was in primary there were 5 in my year!

my sister is Joanne and there were 3 joannes and a joanna in her year

DD 2, there are 3 Emilys, and Ella and an Elle in her class (mine is Ella -I didn't even know it was popular when I gave her the name)

thought DD1 would have a really common name -Katy -and I don't know another one!

we nearly called DS Elliot, partly because it was more unusual than our other choices - Ben and Sam.
in the end we didn't, but if we had, he would have been one of 3 Elliots in the 9 boys in his year group at school (village school small year groups).
as it is he is the only child with his (popular) name in the school now.
you never can tell.

chickydoo · 10/10/2011 23:06

out of 30 kids
2 Darcys
2 sams
2 Ellies
2 Henrys
3 mias
Poor teacher.....

seeker · 10/10/2011 23:09

And you know something? It doesn't matter!

StetsonsAreCool · 10/10/2011 23:09

At secondary school I was one of about 10 Kate/Katie/Katherine variations.

In my group of 'baby' friends, there's a Katy, Katie, Cate and Catherine. Not to mention the two other Katherines, 3 Catherines, a Kathy and and Cathy I know in my wider circle of acquaintances.

Not exactly the same, but in DD's nursery group (just the baby room) out of the 8 babies that were there this morning when I dropped off, 6 had names beginning with E. I think there are two Evies, there was a Ewan, Eliza, Ella and I can't remember the other one. Too many Es.

PattySimcox · 10/10/2011 23:17

Several Harrys and variations of Isobel Isabelle Isabella Ellie and Ella in the DCs classes.

Lots of Lisa Sharon Jackie Gary
Dean when I was at school

growing3rdbump · 10/10/2011 23:21

In my dd's class there are 3 Abigails! All known as Abi / abbie or Abby. In, ds's current reception class there, are no duplicates although there are lots of similar names like, molly, ppoppy, evie etc.

LeaveYourDignityAtTheDoor · 10/10/2011 23:34

In my secondary, there was 11 Lindseys, all with different spellings and 7 Stephens.

I was the only one in the entire school with my name.

DS1 is the only one with his name.

DS2 is still a baby so time will tell. When I picked his name I hadn't heard anyone use it for a while but since then, I've heard of a few.
