DH and I love the name Priya but we have a very English surname and think it might not go. Opinions on that and the name in general please!! :)

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 09/10/2011 17:47

It sounds like a car

Blackduck · 09/10/2011 17:51

Its sanskrit and means dear or beloved. I am partial as it is my nieces name and she has an English surname

Pippaandpolly · 09/10/2011 18:03

I taught a Priya who was the naughtiest girl I have ever met, ever ever ever! She was also really sweet and could drive you crazy while making you smile like no other kid. But I doubt that helps! She was (is!) Indian - I've never met an English Priya. It's a very pretty name - I like it a lot.

catsareevil · 09/10/2011 18:09

I think it is a lovely name.

MelinaM · 09/10/2011 18:37

Toyota Prius sprang to mind when I saw Priya. I do like it thoughSmile

MangoMonster · 09/10/2011 18:40

Lovely name :)

LynetteScavo · 09/10/2011 18:42

I know 2 mixed race Priyas. If you love it, why not?

titan · 09/10/2011 18:45

It's a beautiful name. People may think it slightly odd if she has no Indian/Hindu heritage but that shouldn't deter you if it's your favourite name.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 09/10/2011 20:37

Lovely name.

OddBoots · 09/10/2011 20:41

I met the only Priya I know while we were both in hospital together, she complained that she has such a common name.

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/10/2011 20:44

Makes me think of something electrical or mechanical or a water filter. But then I am bog standard English and have never heard of the name Priya before.

deadka · 09/10/2011 20:45

Sounds like a car. Sorry.

MysteriousHamster · 09/10/2011 20:49

I think it's lovely, though do tend to think of it as an Indian name

Romilly70 · 09/10/2011 20:50

If i heard the name without meeting the child, i would expect to meet a little child of indian & english heritage from what you describe...

othersideofchannel · 09/10/2011 21:02

Lovely name with a lovely meaning.

Don't get the car association at all Confused

motherinferior · 09/10/2011 21:03

I know quite a few, including my cousin Priya. (My mother is from India.)

winkle2 · 09/10/2011 21:09

Extremely popular Indian name.

helendigestives · 09/10/2011 21:14

Priya is a lovely name.

A1980 · 09/10/2011 21:20

Toyota Prius!

My Indian friend with that name hates it. I like it.

But would never use it unless my partner was Asian. It would just be werid to use it unless you're Asian.

33goingon64 · 09/10/2011 21:40

There's a famous violinist called Priya Mitchell. She is white and it never occurred to me that it was an Asian name. I think it's beautiful and you should use it even with an English surname.

mathanxiety · 09/10/2011 21:45

My feeling about names from other cultures is that it is fine to use them as long as you use the correct spelling and pronunciation (not See-ob-han for Siobhán for instance), as long as you don't use a name that has religious significance that you overlook (like Levi), use a girl's name for a boy and vice versa (Sasha, Misha) just because you like the sound of it that way, or as long as people from that culture don't mind sharing. I think it's a lovely name personally.

AnnaBegins · 09/10/2011 21:47

I know an English Priya with an English surname, lovely name (not so lovely girl though!)

scaevola · 09/10/2011 21:52

Is it pronounced Pree-ya or Pry-ya?

DialMforMummy · 09/10/2011 21:53

Very nice but very popular.

minipie · 10/10/2011 11:12

I know lots of Priyas (well, at least 3) - they are all of Indian origin.

It's a pretty name but I would assume any Priya was of Indian origin. So it would be a bit odd if your DD is not. But I don't think it matters if your surname is English (eg if you are Indian but your DH is English).
