DH and I love the name Priya but we have a very English surname and think it might not go. Opinions on that and the name in general please!! :)

PS two of the Priyas I know have now married English men and so have changed their Indian surname for an English surname anyway!

I think it's a pretty name although the only Priya I 'know' is Leonard's girlfriend on The Big Bang Theory Grin (and they pronounce it Pree-ya)

I would find it a bit odd if you don't have Indian heritage (not sure if you do or not!). It's a very pretty name though.

Rhubarbgarden · 10/10/2011 14:25

Beautiful name.

Priya Mitchell has an Indian mother (I used to know her). Lots of us have white skin and an Asian parent.

MamaLazarou · 13/10/2011 14:40

Not for a white child.

ginaribena · 13/10/2011 19:56

I agree very nice name but there are a lot of Priyas around.. although its not necessarily a bad thing for name to be popular is it?

Methe · 13/10/2011 20:00

Beautiful name, i've never heard it before.

MangoMonster · 13/10/2011 20:05

Agree I have an Indian dad, lovely name. Mine is Indian too and people seem to like it. I don't think it matters about colour of skin or heritage.

EricNorthmansMistress · 14/10/2011 11:53

Strange if you have no connection to the country. English people using welsh/irish names is a bit different as we're so culturally and physically close, but a name as obviiously indian as Priya - bit odd.

manicinsomniac · 14/10/2011 21:51

There can't be that many Priyas around, it isn't in the top 300 names.

I've only ever met one. I think she's mixed race Indian-British but could have been wholly Indian, never met the parents.

She was a really difficult and disruptive child to teach so it's put me off the name but, if I can divorce the child from the name in my head, yes it's a pretty name.

I don't see why you should have to be Indian to use it. We wouldn't suggest to an Indian mother that she couldn't call her child Harriet would we!

myncichips · 21/10/2011 09:12

Thanks that's really helpful - its on the shortlist now definately so we'll just see if she looks like a Priya when she comes now! :)

Ooh I love indian/hindu/sanskrit names. They are so pretty. My personal fave is Mohini for a girl but I love Habiba and Rani too. They'd be a def choice if we had a girl.
There's absolutely no reason why you couldn't have one of these names, being english. Ayesha is one name which has become popular but has eastern roots.

Priya is lovely. absolutely lovely. Smile

rockboobs · 21/10/2011 12:52

oh, and my brother is white british, a muslim and married a white british muslim.

they have 4 beautiful blonde children, all with 'conventional' muslim names. Don't get bogged

down with rules and regulations, call your child the name that suits them best...

and Good Luck! Smile Smile

Priya Mitchell, the well-known violinist is half Indian and half Anglo-Irish. Priya (Preeya) means "dear" or "loved one".

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 23:42

It's nice, use it!

Matryoschka · 08/06/2012 07:51

I don't get this "it's weird if neither of you are Indian" - if we could never borrow names from other cultures then there would be no Esme (French)/Layla (Arabic)/Phoebe (Greek)/Francesca (Italian) etc etc. We're British and we have the privilege of being able to use whatever name we like for whatever reason, unlike in some cultures where there are restrictions and approval is needed for your chosen name.
My DS has a beautiful African name and neither me or DP are of African origin!
Go for Priya if you love it :)
