Anyone actually managed to pick an unusual name?

I'd really love my DC to have an unusual name and personally wouldn't like it if there ended up being 4 others in his/her class at school etc. I gathered together a list of names I like bit looking on here loads of other people like them too so I've clearly, subconsciously, picked up a penchant for fashionable names. So..I was wondering, did you pick an unusual name for your DC which is actually still unusual now they are at school? How did you do it and have you got any tips for avoiding the latest trends?

My sister has a german name (think non planetary williams tennis sister) and a german surname, my maiden name, which I hope to use as a middle name if we have a boy and the names go okay together.

I'm currently 30 weeks preggo (and we have opted not to find out the gender) but I definitely want names that are out of the Top 10! I have checked all the names I like on the ONS list and a few were ruled out for being too popular- such as Ava and Grace.

My family are Irish and we are definitely leaning that way- our favourite for a girl is Aoife (pronounced Ee-fa) and for a boy we like Cormac, Ronan and Albie. Hubby's favourite for a boy is Rex (like Locket's DS!) and my favourite for a boy is Ruari (traditional Irish spelling of Rory).
There were a couple of Irish girls names we really liked but had to rule them out as the spelling/ pronounciation were impossible (such as Caoimhe which is said as Keeva and Saoirse which is Seersha)
If you want to look at Irish names this is a good site to trawl through
www.babynamesofireland.com/

I also agree with comedaygoday in that old fashioned names that are currently less fashionable work well- Henry is on the boys shortlist and Martha and Rose are on the girls.

As you'll see we have lots of ideas and the short list is actually quite long! I'm convinced that when we see the LO we will just "know" what the right name is!

Carlitawantsababy · 06/10/2011 17:52

It's from Latin but often used by Germans. Some websites will say it's german, others, Italian or Latin but I guess there a few names like that? I love it, it's a great name.

Caoimhe and Saoirse are both on my list but yeah, may be tricky as we live in England!

I know a Tierney girl version (apparently) of Tiernan

Also knew a Breezy who had a lovely calm personality & was well suited to her name.

I had a little promotion of my brother's unusual but not odd name earlir, but forgot to say wheat it was. Anyway, it's Ambrose.

DawnOfTheDeementedDead · 06/10/2011 18:26

Glakit - You have impeccable taste Wink

GeriH · 06/10/2011 18:26

I really really like Caoimhe but for some reason don't like it spelt Keeva at all- silly eh?

Flamingredhead · 06/10/2011 18:29

ds1 and ds 2 nope there Italian names so not heard another one at school .Though ds2 is also used by spanish.Dd name not another at schoo but have hard a few with the same name when out but often spelt Eric claptons way

and ds3 is very Irish and never head another one atall in the uk and people often comment they never heard his name

Flamingredhead · 06/10/2011 18:30

oh downside they all have to spell their names for people .Except ds 3 as he cant talk properley and i do love seeing what people come up with for his name

thisisyesterday · 06/10/2011 18:57

ambrose is a great name

also Clement

I have a very ordinary name. I was one of about 8 in my year at school. However, it has 3 different spellings so despite it being very. very normal I still have to spell it all the time.
ditto my surname! very normal but 2 diff spellings

GenevieveHawkings · 06/10/2011 18:59

I can't really see the point of this thread if people aren't prepared to reveal the unusual names they've managed to pick!

Feilefoo · 06/10/2011 19:05

My brother has the most unique mane I've ever known, I've never met another person with his name anywhere I've ever travelled. I may use it for my ds if we're so lucky to get a sticky this time around!

BustyDeLaGhetto · 06/10/2011 19:07

If DD had been a boy I would have called him Loki (Norse God of mischief, I think, amongst others.)

Scathac · 06/10/2011 19:20

my boss was called Rex in the 1980s ... actually, even tho i can't say i liked him, i didnt dislike him. i DID like his name, tho!!! and Rex Harrison ... mmm ....

LinzerTorte · 06/10/2011 19:21

Cup Isolde is lovely. Our three all have fairly traditional names that work in both English and German, but I sometimes wish I'd gone for something a bit more "different". And I should have insisted on a Welsh middle name at least!

Lily is pretty, DidYouSmash . :)

wickedwitchofwaterloo · 06/10/2011 19:29

My Dad made my name up, I'm yet to meet another with the same spelling of my name, but I have seen the odd variation crop up in the last 29 years.

I just put it into google and the first 4 posts are from various internet activity I've had over the years, a few are my name minus one letter, so I'm pretty sure no-one actually has my name due to its spelling Grin

CheerfulYank · 06/10/2011 19:33

I went to school with a Saebyn. Pronounced Say-bin.

stegasaurus · 06/10/2011 19:36

DD has an unusual Welsh name though we aren't Welsh or living in Wales. It isn't on the ONS stats lists for the past couple of years which I think means there were less than 3 born each year. She is only 5m so it could turn out to be popular by the time she gets to school but I doubt it. We didn't set out to give her an unusual name. Our second choice was Emily.

girliefriend · 06/10/2011 19:42

When I choose my dds name it didn't occur to me that it would be popular and I choose it as it was a favourite great aunts name, now know it is very very popular!!! A bit annoying tbh!!!
