Anyone actually managed to pick an unusual name?

I'd really love my DC to have an unusual name and personally wouldn't like it if there ended up being 4 others in his/her class at school etc. I gathered together a list of names I like bit looking on here loads of other people like them too so I've clearly, subconsciously, picked up a penchant for fashionable names. So..I was wondering, did you pick an unusual name for your DC which is actually still unusual now they are at school? How did you do it and have you got any tips for avoiding the latest trends?

I think 'Baby' is used for a baby that is stillborn in the statistics (i.e. where the parents didn't register a name for the baby).

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 06/10/2011 15:32

ready, is it Lucrezia? If so then I am afraid I have bad news for you...

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 06/10/2011 15:40

my DD would have been Rowan Elizabeth, if DS2 had been a girl he would have been Rio or willow, middle name of ds1 is Haydn wish we did this first name as his is fairly common, also like Hermione, September, Troy, Reuben and Caitlin.

i live in france and i find the differences in trends for baby names fascinating. I know plenty of women in my age group (40's) called Florence, Béatrice; Nathalie, Virginie, Slyvie and Isabelle and no one would dream of calling a baby those names today. Most popular baby names are Léa, Manon, Chloé, Emma and for boys - Hugo, Tom, Enzo,Luca, Clément, Théo and Raphael.

I think there are lots of pretty french names for girls - my favourites are Constance, Joséphine, Solange, Sabine, Estelle and Maud

Thanks for all the comments and ideas everyone. We will not choose a name just because it's unusual, I have to love it but part of loving it and continuing to love it is that it is also unusual. If I didn't care about loving it too I wouldn't have started this thread and instead just called it Rumplestilskin regardless of gender! Grin there are some fab suggestions here and thanks to all those with super unusual and gorgeous names who have PM'd me. I need to try to find these more detailed statistics, someone kindly linked me to the top 100 list for each year but I'd love to see the less popular ones for ideas. Will have a google! It's great all this names chat, DH is only interested in chunks of 10 minutes! Grin

These are the names of children where I teach that I have never met another one of - or not in recent years at least. (terrible sentence!) I haven't included names that are only so unusual because of their spelling:

Girls: Aliya, Anastasia, Amreeta, Annalise, Athene, Camilla, Caprice, Cathy, Celest, Cerys, Christabel, Clare, Fenella, Fionnhuala, Gemma, Iona, Jaskiran, Juliet, Katinka, Mira, Meg, Nayana, Nyah, Pippa, Rosemary, Sadie, Samai, Samya, Sorcha, Zia

Boys: Alejandro, Arnav, Ayrton, Barnaby, Benedict, Craig, Cosmo, Diego, Douglas, Ferdi, Fitch, Gennady, Gregory, Guy, Hal, Hector, Joleyon, Keshav, Monty, Nelson, Niall, Nacho, Oluwakorede, Oluwatoni, Orlando, Orson, Paris, Peter, Rafi, Ranulph, Rex, Ruan, Shea, Simon, Tasimba, Tavish, Tawanda, Teo, Tolulope, Vishal

Some of those might not be unusual names in other cultures or countries at all, I don't know.

CupOfBrownJoy · 06/10/2011 16:07

Being from Wales I always thought I would use Welsh names, I love lots of Welsh boys names; Iolo, Oisin, Ieuan, Gethyn, Iestyn...

However, DP is German and none of the German rellies would have a cat-in-hell's chance of ever pronouncing the name!

So far the only German/British name I can come up with that I like is Clara Sad

moogdroog · 06/10/2011 16:18

I love Roscoe. DH was having none of it. Dog's name he said. Bah.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 06/10/2011 16:24

My daughter is Brogan, and its Irish.

AnnaKissed · 06/10/2011 16:27

I think the best idea is to go for names that everyone has heard of but you don't actually know anyone called that (if you get what I mean)

I'm thinking slightly old fashioned names like Nadine, Jill, John etc.

I'm surprised that Kieran had been mentioned, I've taught lots of them!

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 06/10/2011 16:29

Yikes Deemented, I see you also have a Brogan, and the boys name I had picked for her was Brennan!

CupOfBrownJoy · 06/10/2011 16:32

oh, google has just come up with Isolde/Isole/Isold (for a girl) which is German with Welsh roots - perfect!

Any opinions?

TonksmarriedaWerewolf · 06/10/2011 16:38

DD1 is Merren. Usual scots spelling is Meron AFAIK. She doesn't even appear on the birth list for her year as there were 3 or fewer with that name!

Actually, don't think it appears on any subsequent year either

Carlitawantsababy · 06/10/2011 16:52

cup Isolde is lovely, very pretty, great sentiment too!
tonks I like merren but one of my niece's to be is having mirin as a middle name so not an option for me.
Anna I prefer unusual names, not so keen on usual but underused although I suppose you could argue that a few in my lost fall in to that category.

CupOfBrownJoy · 06/10/2011 17:30

I know a labrador called Jago too...

I'm liking Soren - I wonder if I could pass it off as German? Smile

Angel786 · 06/10/2011 17:31

If I'd had a boy he wpuldve been Xavier but I had a girl Smile her name is a very well known English name (top 10 last year when she was born) but very unusual for an Asian.

Next one I would LOVE to call Muscat but doubt i will!

CupOfBrownJoy · 06/10/2011 17:32

Muscat means Nutmeg in German Smile
