How would you pronounce Rosalie?

birdofthenorth · 29/09/2011 12:32

Would you say

ROZ-ah-lee
ROSE-ah-lee
ROSA-lee
Roz-ah-LEE
Ros-ah-LEE

Or something else?

Think I've picked up differences in the emphasis as well as whether it's an S or Z sound in the middle. Which would you say, and do you like it? Thanks!

FetchezLaVache · 29/09/2011 12:39

Rose-ah-li (emphasis on first syllable and a Z sound, not a "lee" as such, more like the "ly" in "likely").

birdofthenorth · 29/09/2011 12:41

Oh this is helpful!

So almost like Romilly with a Z?!

ROZ zer lee.

scarletfingernail · 29/09/2011 19:04

Rose-ah-lee with emphasis on the rose.

This is a traditional family middle name of ours passed down several generations. We've always believed the pronounciation to be as above. (I guess that doesn't have to mean we're right though)

helendigestives · 29/09/2011 19:16

ROZ-ah-lee

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 29/09/2011 19:18

ROSE ah lee

scaevola · 29/09/2011 19:22

Surely if you want "rose-a-lee" the spelling would be Rosa-Leigh?

It's like Rosamund - Ros is said "roz", so "roz-a-lee"

DesertOrchid · 29/09/2011 19:39

ROSE-uh-lee/ROE-zuh-lee, definitely.

I think it's French in origin, so I'm guessing the French pn would fall somewhere between 'Roz' and 'Rose', with the length of the O halfway between the two. Hence the disputed anglicised versions.

pootros · 29/09/2011 19:42

ROZ-ah-lee
Rosalia was my no 1 name - then a mate got theirs in 1st with Rosanna. Gutted!
