Star or Constellation Names

Nightstar · 23/09/2011 21:34

The girls in my family have all been named after stars, or a foreign version of the meaning of star (e.g. my name is Seren, which is star in Welsh)

But I'm having trouble coming up with boys names that don't sound daft.

So far the only one that seems vaguelly normal is Orion, which i dont like. Any suggestions?

The best ones have been used in HP - Bellatrix, Sirius, Draco, Andromeda

I think Castor and Pollux are underused! I'll see if I can find you a nice link with a list, for you proper perusal.

Nightstar · 23/09/2011 21:42

Thanks, yes I went through a few lists and it seems JK Rowling was at the same lists!

Would prefer not to have a HP name if possible. I did have Castor on my list then DH said Castor Oil, and so it got struck off. I think Pollux sounds like a skin condition.

Oh dear, it's very hard!

Here's wiki - boyish possibilities include: Leo, Hercules, Phoenix, Tarazed, Achird, Alphard, Rasalas, Aldebaran, Alioth?

Nightstar · 23/09/2011 21:44

Maybe I need something else that is connected to Astronomy but not an actual star? (Just to explain a rather famous atronomer in history was a relative and its become a family tradition)

Thanks Edith, I think Leo is top of my list right now

Pluto
Jupiter
Mars

Uranus Grin

ChineapplePunk · 23/09/2011 22:21

What about Tycho, after Tycho Brahe? Or does it sound a bit pretentious?

IndieNile · 23/09/2011 22:35

Galileo?

UrsulaBuffayTheVampireSlayer · 23/09/2011 22:36

Stella?
I have a Phoebe which means bright, shining moon.

Nightstar · 23/09/2011 22:41

Ummm, most of those are a bit odd, maybe Jupiter could go on the list.

Ursula - We have both a Stella and a phoebe in our family, but we are having a boy

UrsulaBuffayTheVampireSlayer · 23/09/2011 22:43

Sorry I didn't read the boy bit!

Okay, Stellan is great but apparently means peaceful or calm, I'd consider it though. I'd twist Altair into Alistair possibly.

Asa apparently means 'starting life at dawn' which is nice and I adore the name.

Tobias 'born with a star' - meanings quoted are according to random google generated website

EdithWeston · 23/09/2011 22:46

What a lovely tradition!

And what a challenge for us - as I dare say you'll have thought of,or used up, just about everything!

But I'll have a go - how about:

Ptolemy, Isaac, Herschel, Lockyer, Jacobus, Brian, Wilson, Wolf/Wolff, Russell, Shapley, Rossi, Allen, Dicke, Christy, Elliott?

CaptainNancy · 23/09/2011 22:51

Perseus?
Sirius (I know a little Sirius)
Mars
Herschell (?sp)
Neil (Armstrong)

UrsulaBuffayTheVampireSlayer · 23/09/2011 22:52

Luke as in skywalker? Grin

rushofbloodtothefeet · 23/09/2011 23:01

Chineapple I have a secret love of Tycho, but was put off pushing with DP for potential DS when I found the man himself pronounced it like 'teeko' rather than the 'tyke-o' I'd presumed

One of my fave star names is 'Vega' - though for a girl of course.
Dashiell apparently means 'of heaven'
Finley, Holmes and Halley are comets

My DD's middle name is Seren Smile

freerangeeggs · 23/09/2011 23:33

Marius is probably derived from Mars.

I think you should check this entry on Dashiell before making any decisions.

I've heard Atlas used before but it's a bit... mad

Pollux rhymes with bollocks

greenzebra · 24/09/2011 07:27

what a great tradition

Cosmo
Edmund (Edmund Halley)
minor planet names Amos, Aaryn, Aldrin, (heres link to the list because its far to long for me to go through www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/lists/MPNames.html

Arun - sun dawn
Ravi -sun god

greenzebra · 24/09/2011 09:24

Sterling - English menaing 'little star'

Zeke - arabic for 'shooting star'

Samson - hebrew 'sun'

Astley - latin 'stars'

Astin - French 'star like'

Ashwin - indian 'star like'

Psammead · 24/09/2011 10:21

I like Leo!

MammaInTheMaking · 24/09/2011 11:09

Love this thread! Is 'Bear' a constellation of stars...?

I'm not great on stars but 'Orion' has just gone on my list of nature names Smile

Nightstar · 24/09/2011 16:38

There are some great suggestions! Thanks girls.

I've added

Zeke
Cosmo
Perseus
Astin

Though I think Leo is still tipping the balance right now. My poor husband thinks they all sound a bit mad.

I cant go with Stellan because my cousin is Stella, and her sister is Vega (which I agree is a fab name!)

LOL to Luke Skywalker and also to Pollux rhyming with Bollocks!

Do you think it would be totally ruining the tradition if we went with David? As in Star of David?

OP posts:
AlmaMartyr · 24/09/2011 16:56

Fab tradition! Love lots of the names on here, DD has one of them! David seems to fit and is a nice name, haven't heard it much recently but like it.
