Just heard this on the radio, and remembered that when I was pg with DD1 DH wanted to put this on the list along with Anna-Molly (incubus song)

Do you think you could get away with Enola? Or does it bring up the song plus the atom bomb?

OP posts:

I would say not - possibly younger people wouldn't know about the bomb/the song. But it's a great song, I wouldn't discount the possibility of it being remixed/released some day. Definitely I would think "should have stayed at home yesterday".

LetThereBeRock · 21/09/2011 22:08

Well the bomber and bomb were responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 people so if that's not a negative connotation I don't know what is.

''I think Enola is a lovely name, and I think people may be going a tad over the top in regard to the negative connotations. I mean, it's not exactly the same as Myra.........''

Dear god give me strength....... try telling that to the descendants of Hiroshima!

krisskross · 21/09/2011 22:15

Gay....bomb

That's what springs to mind, sorry

seren82 · 21/09/2011 22:49

We have a child at my school called Eniola which I think is lovely. Her sister's name is Ophelie, pronounced Oph-el-ie, not Oph-eel-ie. Love that too. Think they are Nigerian.

"I think Enola is a lovely name, and I think people may be going a tad over the top in regard to the negative connotations. I mean, it's not exactly the same as Myra........."

And the award for Crass Comment of the Week goes to.........

thisisyesterday · 22/09/2011 14:31

i would hazard a guess that chineapple has no idea of the relevance of the name.

dear God.

ChineapplePunk · 22/09/2011 16:23

How very presumption and arrogant of you, thisisyesterday. I am a 40 year old women who is perfectly aware of the Enola Gay mission. I just happen to be of the view that the name is not as negative as most people on here seem to think. And I am certainly not going to make assumptions regarding an individuals education, knowledge, and intelligence because they happen to hold a different opinion regarding a baby name.

Seeker, in what way is the comment crass? The name Myra IS extremely unpopular, and you will be well aware of the reason why. It's not a crass statement, it is a factual one. The thread is about the negative connotations a name can conjure up, and I was using such an example. Good grief.

ChineapplePunk · 22/09/2011 16:24

presumptuous (typo, sorry)

ChineapplePunk · 22/09/2011 16:31

And I am sure the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are rather unconcerned with the name of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on them, but rather with the destruction and heinous act that was inflicted upon them by an imperialist and hypocritical nation.

thisisyesterday · 22/09/2011 17:55

well that's even worse then!

comparing it with Myra Hindley and implying that it's not as bad.. really?

ChineapplePunk · 22/09/2011 18:16

Yes, it is my opinion that the name of an aeroplane is completely different from the name of a person who procured children for a child murderer, and who also may have played an active part in torturing said children. Saying that, this is my personal opinion which you have every right to disagree with, but considering the uncharitable nature of your previous comments, I think this is the last I will say on the matter.

mumnosbest · 23/09/2011 18:30

I know an Enola. Very clever, pretty and cherobic little girl. The name suits her to a T and I think it's lovely.

mathanxiety · 23/09/2011 18:40

Nola is lovely imo, an acronym for New Orleans LA (Louisiana)

There's also Nora, Honora, Honor.

Chineapple, I'm sure not many Japanese children are called Enola all the same, (and yes I know they speak Japanese and Enola probably isn't a Japanese word) but maybe you get the point? You don't call someone by a name that is associated with death on a vast scale even if you are not a member of the community that experienced the destruction, out of respect for the dead or repugnance for the fact that the bomb was dropped.

ChineapplePunk · 23/09/2011 20:40

Mathanxiety, I completely get the point why some people would not wish to call their child Enola. However, my point is that I personally do not regard the name as the same way I would regard names such as Adolph, Myra, or Attila. Those names, to my mind, conjure up negative connotations in a much more direct way. Some people will disagree with that, and that's fine.

ChineapplePunk · 23/09/2011 21:35

There were actually 4 newborn girls registered as Enola in 2009. Also, if my memory serves me right, Nicky Wire, from the Manic Street Preachers has a daughter with the middle name of Enola. So it would seem that people do indeed continue to use the name (bearing in mind that it has generally been a fairly unusual and unique choice, regardless of its connection to Hiroshima). I would hazard a guess that names such as Adolph or Myra won't feature in the present baby names landscape as much, but I could be wrong. After all, look what happened to this family in America because of the name choice for their son.

Ebola

seeker · 24/09/2011 15:01

That's 3 other people who are either ignorant or have no sensitivity!

seeker · 24/09/2011 15:02

Sorry- 4 other people!

ChineapplePunk · 24/09/2011 15:19

Why? Because they have a different opinion regarding the degree of negative significance associated with a specific name than you?

Summerbird73 · 24/09/2011 15:34

chineapple give it up will you Hmm we have established that you think there is no negative connotation attached to the name of the aeroplane; thus named after the pilots mother; that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima killing over 100,000 people. Some people agree with you some disagree, you have made your point.

Calm down dear Wink
