Just idly canvassing opinion as I love it but cannot guess how well it would go down, generally.

DH says it's too Troy. I like it. I don't know any though.

Is it awful?

as in hectoring?

I don't like it, sorry.

I love Horatio though [helpful]

Stormwater · 07/09/2011 15:55

What does too Troy mean? I really like it.

letspickgoogleberries · 07/09/2011 15:56

i know/knew a horrible vial man called Hector so i don't like it at all.

Psammead · 07/09/2011 15:59

Too Troy? Well he meant too buffed-up-demi-Godesque-hero type.

DH gets a bit odd about these things.

I really like it - more so recently because of Dominic West in The Hour I have to admit.

I never think of the association with hectoring/bullying but that may just be me.

comedaygoday · 07/09/2011 17:58

I like it and to be honest don't think the classical allusions are a problem.

Gluttondressedaslamb · 07/09/2011 18:05

I like it, never heard it used in RL. Would it be shortened to Heck?

rachel234 · 07/09/2011 18:32

hec·tor (hktr)

n. A bully.

v. hec·tored, hec·tor·ing, hec·tors
To intimidate or dominate in a blustering way.
To behave like a bully; swagger.

mayanna123 · 07/09/2011 18:34

Awful meaning and awful nicknames (Heck, Hecky..?).

I agree - Horatio is lovely.

PippiLongBottom · 07/09/2011 18:38

I love it. It is top of my sisters fantasy name list for her as yet conceived dc1.

CointreauVersial · 07/09/2011 18:39

Sweet name.

rachel234 · 07/09/2011 18:40

I don't like the meaning. The verb to hector used fairly often so it is hard to dis-associate it from its meaning imo. I also agree about the lack of nice nicknames (Heck, Tor?).

cookielove · 07/09/2011 18:40

I love it, i have been sweetened by it as i look after the most loveliest little boy who is 6 months old called Hector. Grin

rachel234 · 07/09/2011 18:40

Sweet Confused - don't think to hector is sweet...

dreamer79 · 07/09/2011 19:32

You could have the nn Tor to avoid Heck/Hecky?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/09/2011 19:34

Love it. I think Horace could be due a comeback too.

rachel234 · 07/09/2011 19:38

Horace is lovely, as is Horatio.

The problem with nicknames for Hector is that the emphasis is on the Hec part, not the tor part, so don't think that Tor would be a natural nickname.

But my main concern would be the meaning - not nice imo.

TheFlyingOnion · 07/09/2011 19:40

awful.

sorry.

pretentious, even...

sonniebonnie · 07/09/2011 20:46

No, really dislike it, sorry.

LetThereBeRock · 08/09/2011 17:53

Horrid.

scurryfunge · 08/09/2011 17:56

I can only think of Hector' House.

scurryfunge · 08/09/2011 17:56

*Hector's House

mawbroon · 08/09/2011 21:56

I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid in Scotland tbh.

PedigreeChump · 09/09/2011 16:31

Love it, know of a few of varying ages and they are all nice. I am in Scotland though where it seems to be more common.

Bue · 09/09/2011 16:37

My cousins wanted to name their child this (I presume for the Troy / ancient world connection as that would be very them) but they live in the US where it is almost exclusively a Latino name, so they decided it would be too weird. I like it though.
