I have heard of a person named Queenie but really still feel it is more appropriate for a pet.

Miriam - love it
Clementine - not really
Grace - love it
Ella - love it
Beatrice - not so much
Scarlet - like it
Sophia - love it
Shefali - no
Shelly - meh

Clemenetine is BEEEoootiful.

Shelley - no! It's like Kelly and Nicola and Mandy and Elaine. Just too 70's. We are not ready to go back there yet.

I'm sorry, Fellatio, but you are wrong. Clementine is ghastly - I just don't get why so many people love it.

Report
FellatioNelson · 23/08/2011 18:05

I have always loved it throughout all three PGs and my youngest is 12. But they are all boys so I never got to put my money where my mouth is. Plus my surname is Cl...so it would have been crap anyway.

If you want a 'Q' name, how about Quona? This is my sisters name and she's spent her whole life having to spell it for people . My mother tells everyone it's gaelic for 'little dove' but I've never been able to find evidence of this.

Knew a Corrinne who was known as Queenie, no idea why. Wouldn't use it as the 'proper' name myself, I don't think. Up to you though!

Queenie is the name of one of the main characters in Small Island by Andrea Levy. Here's a passage explaining how she was named:

I was christened Victoria Buxton. My mother had wanted me to be christened Queenie but the vicar had said, "No, Mrs Buxton, I'm afraid Queenie is a common name."

"Common!" my mother had replied. "How can it be common? It's a queen's name." The vicar had then given an impromptu sermon which my mother, father and their gathered guests had to listen to as they stood round the stone font in our bleak local church. The vicar went on at length about monarchs having proper names like Edward, George, Elizabeth while everyone, dressed in their pinching church-best shoes began to shift from foot to foot and stifle yawns behind their scrubbed hands. "Take our late queen," the vicar finally explained, "her name, Mrs Buxton, was not queen but Victoria."

So that was how - one thundery August day in a church near Mansfield, dressed in a handed down white-starched christening gown that wouldn't do up at the neck - I, the first born child of Wilfred and Lillie Buxton, came to be christened Victoria yet called forever Queenie.

I love Queenie..it was on my list (as was Dolly - which is my favourite) but my DH put his foot down - we eventually agreed on Beatrice and I love it - we call her Bea-Bea. Good luck with choosing, it's really hard but I would advise to go for something a bit different as you'll find loads of Evie, Ellie, and Isobels when you go to the play groups.
