Gray for a boy?

i love it but DH thinks it's too unusual. In fairness I've never met a Gray so that does make it unusual. I don't mind an unusual name so long as it doesn't result in him being hugely made fun of in school.

What do you think?

What about Grady ?

Wouldn't be my cup of tea, but some people like sur namey names. Grady is quite nice actually IF you had to pick from a list of sur names.

CheerfulYank · 09/08/2011 20:01

Love Gray, and Grayson. But "son" names are SO popular right now and I couldn't just go with Gray as my surname is Brick. Gray Brick just doesn't quite do it, does it? :)

SheCutOffTheirTails · 09/08/2011 20:12

Not nice.

MardyBra · 09/08/2011 20:15

What about Red Brick, Cheerful?

MardyBra · 09/08/2011 20:16

I was sure I heard Red as being used as a name, but having posted that I'm not any more.

browneyesblue · 09/08/2011 20:30

I really liked Gray when I was pregnant with DS, but DH was worried about the 'r' being dropped too.

I had a look at this website, which gives you info about a name and info about how people with that actual name like/dislike it. Unfortunately, there were a few mentions of being called 'Gay', which meant DH vetoed it.

There was also info on similar names, ed Graydon, Grayling, Grayson.

Still personally like the name Gray though...

pjani · 09/08/2011 20:31

I think it's pretty cool! Don't think I'd use it myself though... there is definite childhood torture potential.

CheerfulYank · 09/08/2011 20:31

Red is nn for Frederick, Mardy ... I could start a whole theme: Scarlet, Rusty, Indigo :o

Continuum · 09/08/2011 20:36

Oh I love it! It's something we considered for a split second... as in, that's a gorgeous name, such a shame it rhymes with our surname!! Although rhyming isn't quite as bad as being called Gray Brick is it :o

IHeartKingThistle · 09/08/2011 20:36

Love it!

GlaikitFizzog · 09/08/2011 21:27

Or Shittah Cheerful :o

I love Gray, adding to my list of possibles for DC2!

WheelsOnTheBike · 09/08/2011 21:30

Gray is one thing, I know of someone called Brown! No joke.

CheerfulYank · 09/08/2011 21:41

:o @ Glaikit ...that does have a certain ring to it, eh?

TillyIpswitch · 09/08/2011 21:53

I really like it, actually. I surprise myself...! I wouldn't use it for my own child, but I would think, 'huh, nice name' if I heard about anyone else using it.

I think it has really stylish undertones and while he may well get a bit of playground teasing, as an adult it will be a great name. Distinctive while also not being unique-for-the-sake-of-it.

There are loads and loads of names which lend themselves to a bit of teasing, but which people are hardly going to check themselves into therapy over. Drop - or add - a letter and it gives a double entendre, rhymes with something amusing to 10-year old ears. Heaps of names which you might think are totally bullet-proof teasing-wise, but which some ingenious 12-year old will come up with ammunition for.

Go for it!

LaWeasel · 09/08/2011 21:54

I think it sounds great!

Bellethebelltent · 09/08/2011 22:04

I've heard of a grayston. Quite like gray actually, but think twin two needs an unusual name too!!

MardyBra · 10/08/2011 00:12

A genuine lol for Shittah.

happyjules · 10/08/2011 01:02

I have loved since the actor Gray O'brien was in Peak practice in the 90's (and the actor!) we had it lined up as a middle name seven years ago.. It's not got used as we have 2 dds. Sounds good with your surname.

LexieB · 12/08/2011 13:15

My friend has calleh her baby Grady (its an irish name)

InstantAtom · 12/08/2011 13:19

I don't like it, sorry.

harassedandherbug · 12/08/2011 14:18

I like Gray..... wouldn't work with our surname though. Gray Hall, sounds like a stately home Grin.

I love Grady though

I prefer Gray to Grey definitely because if it's Gray then it's about the sound. If you spell it Grey then it really does become all about the colour. I wouldn't even wear Grey tbh. My school uniform was so boring with a lot of grey and even now I can't bear to wear grey.

Bandwithering · 13/08/2011 12:59

ps, used to be a german guy working for a company we did business with and his name was brun schidt. (or something along those lines - whole office found it embarrassingly close to brown shit though)

Avinalarf · 13/08/2011 13:01

'orrid!
