Ok, following on from the gutting news that my current face girls name Vita is about to become a Play Station console :-() what do you think of...

Petra?
Zara?
Kiki?

Be honest, I can take it!

Love Zara.

Not keen on the other two.

EdithWeston · 04/08/2011 14:20

They are very closely associated with 1970s children's telly (or nearly so).

I'd go for Zara.

birdofthenorth · 04/08/2011 14:25

Which 1970s kids tv? I was born in 1980, sorry!

Another vote for Zara.

EdithWeston · 04/08/2011 14:28

Petra was a Blue Peter dog, and the only one to have statue erected.

Kiki is the frog in Hector's house (ZsaZsa -nearly Zara - was the cat, which is why the three names together put me in happy reminiscence).

Vita the name will outlive vita the playstation, BTW.

belgo · 04/08/2011 14:30

I like Vita,Zita,Zinnia,. Zara is nice to. Don't let a computer game put you off.

IslaValargeone · 04/08/2011 14:35

I like Petra, it's different, certainly in the Uk anyway.
Like Kiki too, Zara I'm a bit meh about.

birdofthenorth · 04/08/2011 14:36

Thanks Edith that makes sense now!

I hope you are all right that Vita has not been ruined forever more!

I loved hectors house which is why I probably like kiki

birdofthenorth · 04/08/2011 14:39

I do like Petra, I like pronounceable but unusual names. Kiki too but worry it might be a bit babyish or informal for adulthood?

Zara is DH's suggestion, which I do like, but would have been better received if we weren't watching Zara Philips' wedding coverage at the time! Also is it a bit like calling your baby Top Shop to today's generation?!

My DD is isn't Kiki as a nickname, I'm not hugely keen but it's OK.

I have a lovely cousin called Petra who I saw this week for the first time in 10 years and she's as great as ever. But over here in Germany they pronounce it Paytra, which I personally prefer.

Zara is my favourite of the three names.

manicinsomniac · 04/08/2011 14:54

Love Zara, Petra is ok, Kiki is a bit too 'out there' for my taste.

rachel234 · 04/08/2011 15:04

In German Petra is pronounced Peh (long e sound)-tra. It is an e sound, not ay. I like it.

Kiki is a little babyish and Zara a little 'trendy' and may date more.

Yama · 04/08/2011 16:00

You could spell it Zarah.

mathanxiety · 04/08/2011 16:09

Kiki was a parrot in an Enid Blyton story iirc.

Petra is a bit 'wanted a boy'.

Zara is nice -- but I would use Vita despite the game console.

Or would you consider Zita?

Suncottage · 04/08/2011 16:14

My nn when I was little was Kiki becuase I could imitate the frog in Hector's House - I am not sure I would like to be an adult Kiki though Hmm

InstantAtom · 04/08/2011 16:24

Zara is lovely.

Petra is the Blue Peter dog.

Kiki is too showbizzy/nicknamey.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 04/08/2011 16:55

Ah yes, what Rachel said about the German way of saying Petra, I couldn't think how to explain it properly.

Bandwithering · 04/08/2011 16:57

Zara is the nicest there. Petra reminds me of a dog for some reason. An alsatian. Or a petri dish. What was the other one? Kiki? oh cute nick namebut put Katherine on the bc perhaps.

Bandwithering · 04/08/2011 16:59

ah the blue peter dog! of course.

MEBMotherof3 · 04/08/2011 18:27

A friend of mine has just had a Zaria (like Zara but Za-re-a), just thought I'd throw that out there!

RatherBeParcelPiste · 04/08/2011 18:33

To be fair Petra the Dog is ancient history! I was there and I know Grin

My brother had a friend called Petra at the time of Petra the Dog and it was fine. She would be late 40s now. I like it though...

EyeoftheStorm · 04/08/2011 18:33

I have a Zara and it really suits her. If meaning is important, I've come across 'brightness of dawn' and 'splendour of flowers'. Shops and newly-married prinesses rarely come up although is sometimes heard as Sara.

EyeoftheStorm · 04/08/2011 18:34

princesses!

RatherBeParcelPiste · 04/08/2011 18:37

Actually we know a 14 year old gorgeous Vita - it really suits her. She'll have stick won't she when the game comes out? Sad

But the others are right a baby Vita will outlive the console, which will probably be defunct by the time she is 2.
