Well, given that our nickname for Aeneas when we were reading the Aeneid at school was "Anus", I'd personally steer clear.

But, you know, lots of names have potentially dodgy nicknames, so whatever floats your boat!

How about Anchises? Astyanax?

Oh, and when we were performing Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, we - very maturely - would refer to it as Dildo and Anus.

Do you mean Anais? Or is it pronounced as it's spelled, in which case it's a bit too similar to anus imo.

Oh, just realised it's a boys name, Greek, meaning 'to be worthy of praise'. Still not sure how it sounds though.

I suggested it for DC1, but husband thought it was too close to "anus."

When I was at school, there was a plaque commemmorating a Victorian former pupil Aeneas somebody-or-other and I think seeing it every day at school in gold paint imprinted it on me as a good name.

I realize who Aeneas was. I'm asking if that is a name here and now. As in, chosen by non-cruel parents to name English children in the 21st century.

Also, Aeneas goes all mental and violent at the end of the Aeneid and brutally murder Turnus, the indigenous prince whose land Aeneas nicks to found Rome, so not exactly a role model.

If you want a Greek name, do you want a mythical name or an 'historical" name?

For Greek mythological names, borrow or buy a copy of "Apollodorus's" Library of Greek Mythology, which contains shortened versions of most Greek myths - lots of name inspiration there.

For Roman mythical names and some historical ones, browse through Wiseman's Myths of Rome.

Atticus is nice, and has good 20thC connotations wrt "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Cassius is also a good name, IMO.

I wouldn't go for Tiberius, as Tacitus has rather ruined his reputation, and by the end of his reign, things were not well in the imperial household...

The monumentally gormless young police officer was called Aeneas. I was surprised when I found that out. I always thought he was called Eeenis.
