Which names are would you consider 'too posh/try-hard/odd' to be used?

Having seen a few names pop up which, when read out to my office colleagues, have caused great hilarity, I was wondering which names poeple on MN generally consider too posh/try hard/odd to be passed off in RL. I absolutely love Arabella but have been told that DH and I aren't posh enough to use it :( Ditto Lucinda.

I have to admit I did laugh at Mungo. Sorry to any Mungos/parents of Mungos out there!

I did comment above how unconsidered I think this thread is (both my sons names have been criticised). It has declined further since I commented. It was one thing to say that you don't like a name, but to keep on making fun of a persons choice is just bullying.

We all have different tastes but I would rather choice a "marmite" name and be criticised by a few than a really popular name.

However I would never say hurtful repeatedly spiteful comments.

LittlePebble · 27/07/2011 07:27

Wow I'm shocked at some of the posts on this thread! lockets I love Rex it's an awesome name I've been trying to get my DH to agree to for some time. We've vetoed Ben off our list along with Jess as I cannot see these as anything but dog names....it's all down to your families choice of pet names isn't it? I've never met a dog called Rex.
Hmm Did have a dog called Misty once and now know a girl called Misty..... I would never be so rude as to tell her it's a dogs name and now it seems completely normal. [wanders off to add half the names on here to her list....] Grin

CheerfulYank · 27/07/2011 07:40

It can vary so much too...here "Xander" is a bit downmarket.

CheerfulYank · 27/07/2011 07:51

Plus, Rex is nice. I like it. Like Max but not so popular. My dogs growing up were Hannah, Maggie, Lucy, Little Anne, Emma, and Jack. Right now my parents have Emmett and Gabby. It's not like lockets named her son Fluffy or something! Hmm

I have a Samuel. Common?

redheadbedhead · 27/07/2011 08:01

well done for not descending into an all out fight lockets - some people are just twats and not worth your time.

And..there was a post earlier with Timothy on it!!!! wtf is wrong with Timothy?? Is Tim not a really common name?

redheadbedhead · 27/07/2011 08:02

oh and when I lived at home we had a dog called Sam and a cat called Oscar. They're just names, people!

CheerfulYank · 27/07/2011 08:05

Yes, Red ! My son is Samuel but always gets Sam and we've had the odd "dog's name" comment. Really?! Sam?

redheadbedhead · 27/07/2011 08:16

I'm going to call my first child Pickles Muffin Fluffy the Great just to cause a Mumsnet bitchfight brouhahah.

I knew 2 dogs called David and Brian. Now THAT is odd

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/07/2011 08:45

That's not true, everlong. Have you actually read some of the comments people have made? It's been plain nasty bullying behaviour, and completely uncalled for and lockets has not taken it as a personal affront at all. She has been most dignified - and really not taken the comments personally.

Thanks StayFrosty, great minds, and all that...

lockets REX is a brilliant name!
Our family dogs have been called: Jenny, Angus, Molly, Milly, Ella, Isla and Skye! And there are plenty of children out there with these names.....

Well said...PelvicFloorOfSteeland thereisalightanditnevergoesout

I was going to be called Pale Tangerine. Seriously. Posh father and it was his idea. Luckily, I escaped years of playground hell when he read a book and fell in love with a more 'normal' name.

Or maybe he just stopped taking all those drugs ;)

Don't care what people choose, but am a bit Hmm about the 'hostage to fortune' virtue type names, y'know, Grace, Verity, Charity, Charisma (as mentioned upthread). I mean, there is a Grace in DDs class and, erm, it isn't the first word that would spring to mind to describe her. Just seems a bit risky to me using those kind of descriptions as given names...

Cattleprod · 27/07/2011 09:19

What do people mean when they say 'made-up' names? I've seen the term several times on this thread and others, but with hundreds of thousands of names in existence, with their various derivatives and alternative spellings, I'd have thought it would be pretty difficult to create a name that is completely unique. Over the centuries there have been billions of people, all with at least one name, so most letter combinations will have been used before.

Awomancalledhorse · 27/07/2011 09:29

Cattleprod, names I class as made up are things like; Nevaeh, Heavenleigh, Robertisha or when people change the spelling of normal names to make them 'individual'; Dextuur, Dayvid etc

NightLark, for the reasons you've mentioned I've decided to never call a daughter of mine Chastity or Virginia because you just know she'd grow up to be a bit loose.

ElanaH · 27/07/2011 09:39

We named our daughter Rayne (pronounced Rain) and her second name is Kendall, together the names mean "Blessing and queen ruler of the valley". We do live in a Valley and she does seem to think that she is the ruler of all the children that live near and on our farm! And she is such a blessing to us, she has a very giving heart, so I am sure that she is a blessing to all the people in her life.
Just go's to show how the meaning of a name can impact your childs life!

Cattleprod · 27/07/2011 10:01

Neveah - (American) - Child from heaven
Heavenleigh - (American) - From paradise; from the sky (deriv. of Heaven)
Both are in my names book.

Names like Robertisha I would class as combining two names (dad called Robert, mum called Latisha?) and most names have many recognised spellings and variations (David has 26 versions just in my one book, although Dayvid isn't one of them!). I agree that some of the 'yooneeq' spellings just make the parents look illiterate.

I'm wondering if it's possible to actually create a completely unique, made-up name, rather than just tweaking existing ones.

ElanaH · 27/07/2011 10:01

Wow...I just read some of these threads!! There must be some really board housewives out there to have the time to sit and think of all the nasty things they can come up with!!
Lockets I love the name Rex, and I think that it has a wonderful meaning. We should all give our childrens names with GREAT meanings, because by doing that we are blessing their lives from the day that they are boarn. Lockets can only expect GREAT things from Rex!

Lizzylou · 27/07/2011 10:07

This thread turned so nasty, there are some meanspirited and insensitive people on here!

I love the name Rex as well Lockets, no matter if I didn't, your son, your choice.

I'm actually more gutted that neither of my boy's names has been mentioned, I want to be faux posh and try hard. I have obviously lumbered them with beige names.
