Why are there no bird names?

There are flower names (Rose, Heather) and herb names (Basil, Rosemary) and nature names (River, Skye) and animal names (Wolf, Bear) but no bird names. Except Robin.

I was thinking more along the lines of Robert or James....

ImpyCelyn · 15/07/2011 19:50

Yes, I realised that after I posted :o Oops Blush

GrimmaTheNome · 15/07/2011 19:52

Or maybe I'm thinking of the Tibetan Blackbird (Turdus Maximus)

TeacupTempest · 15/07/2011 21:37

Peregrine

Rhubarbgarden · 15/07/2011 21:59

Linnet is a lovely, lovely name

Karbea · 15/07/2011 22:21

Wolf and Bear aren't names unless you're naming a dog, surely?

Merle · 15/07/2011 22:26

'Merle' means 'blackbird'.

mathanxiety · 16/07/2011 06:57

How about Sparrow? Wink

Corbin is an olde word for crow afaik.

Bonsoir · 16/07/2011 07:06

How about fish names? A French friend of mine has just called her DC4/DS1 Colin (which is French for pollock).

chillistars · 16/07/2011 07:15

I'd like to recommend Pigeon....

ImpyCelyn · 16/07/2011 13:36

My name is a fish in French. Wasn't a problem til I married a Frenchman :(

peeriebear · 16/07/2011 13:40

I adore the name Linnet, so musical sounding and pretty. It doesn't go with my surname though! :(

NattersAndMutters · 16/07/2011 16:36

I was talking to someone the other day who told me they had been at school with two sisters called Puffin and Pelican.

figgygal · 16/07/2011 16:56

My DH is a bit of a birdwatcher we went thru lots of names and didn't come up with any that we would use until we came across serin now seren is a very popular girls name in Wales so that is a big fave of ours now

pointydog · 16/07/2011 17:14

Merle

allhailtheaubergine · 16/07/2011 17:39

Merle for a boy or a girl?

The only Merle I know is Merle Haggard.

I like Merle.

OP posts:
pointydog · 16/07/2011 17:50

I think it sounds like a girl name.

pointydog · 16/07/2011 17:50

Oh, I have just seen that Merle has already suggested merle

Sula is Gaelic for gannet- it's my dogs name :)

Merle · 16/07/2011 19:17

Paperback suggested it first but I couldn't let it go by without joining in. I like it; I guess for a girl.

LuciaLyca · 18/07/2011 13:19

I have a daughter named Peregrine, shortened to Perry :)

GrimmaTheNome · 18/07/2011 13:23

The only Merle I've ever heard of was the actress Merle Oberon

Merle · 19/07/2011 18:28

I wish I had daughters - what great names. Peregrin is super, although I fear I have mis-spelt it.

Merle · 19/07/2011 18:29

Only an 'e' out. Oh well, I have learned something today.
