Why are there no bird names?

There are flower names (Rose, Heather) and herb names (Basil, Rosemary) and nature names (River, Skye) and animal names (Wolf, Bear) but no bird names. Except Robin.

I was thinking more along the lines of Robert or James....

Or maybe I'm thinking of the Tibetan Blackbird (Turdus Maximus)

Peregrine

Linnet is a lovely, lovely name

Wolf and Bear aren't names unless you're naming a dog, surely?

'Merle' means 'blackbird'.

How about Sparrow?

Corbin is an olde word for crow afaik.

How about fish names? A French friend of mine has just called her DC4/DS1 Colin (which is French for pollock).

My name is a fish in French. Wasn't a problem til I married a Frenchman :(

I adore the name Linnet, so musical sounding and pretty. It doesn't go with my surname though! :(

I was talking to someone the other day who told me they had been at school with two sisters called Puffin and Pelican.

My DH is a bit of a birdwatcher we went thru lots of names and didn't come up with any that we would use until we came across serin now seren is a very popular girls name in Wales so that is a big fave of ours now

Merle

Merle for a boy or a girl?

The only Merle I know is Merle Haggard.

I like Merle.

I think it sounds like a girl name.

Oh, I have just seen that Merle has already suggested merle

Sula is Gaelic for gannet- it's my dogs name :)

Paperback suggested it first but I couldn't let it go by without joining in. I like it; I guess for a girl.

I have a daughter named Peregrine, shortened to Perry :)

The only Merle I've ever heard of was the actress Merle Oberon

I wish I had daughters - what great names. Peregrin is super, although I fear I have mis-spelt it.
