this is now officially dd's name. Am having slight regret I didn't choose Isabella (sob), so need a pretty nn I can use to soften the blow of not really liking Elizabeth. Which are feminine and useable in your opinion?

LOVE Elizabeth. It is my choice for a girl's name. My mother was called Elizabeth and was called Betty or Queenie!

If you like Isabella though, then have Isabella. It is a lovely name and she is your baby.

my dsis answers to ziz - which in itself is short for zizi (need to ensure that you don't have many french connections if you choose this as it is sometimes used there a bit like we might use willy here), and also eliza, liza, lizalu and widge (e-widge-a-buff and zizi were how I could say her name/nickname when I was tiny). At one school she went to they called her lily.

The only nicknames that I have never called her and never thought of her as are Liz and Beth - she's never been known as beth but her dh calls her liz, her work call her liz, everybody apart from those who knew her growing up call her liz. Which can make for some embarrassing phone calls when you ring her at work (or college previously) and ask to speak to Ziz and they say that nobody of that name works there, so then you change it to Elizabeth and they say no, nobody of that name works here. So you apologise for wrong number, ring back and go through the whole palaver again and finally they say oh you mean LIZ. No, I don't. she just actively isn't a liz to me and I often forget that liz can be a nickname for elizabeth as I so disassociate the two!!

lachesis · 13/07/2011 23:50

My MIL is an Elspeth.

pestroid · 13/07/2011 23:51

I work with a lady called Elizabeth but everyone calls her Tizzy. (she called herself this as she couldn't pronounce Lizzy)

lachesis · 13/07/2011 23:51

My sister is a Liz.

ruelachesty · 14/07/2011 00:43

i have a lizzie, i loved effie but she is just a lizzie, she may decide to change it when she's older and thats fine.

But if you're still undecided then why not ignore the name issue for a while and call her a totally different nickname until you can sort your connecting with her and then go from there. DD1 is mostly toots and DD2 is bubs (or either is princess etc). Then maybe her name will just come to you?

Just try and enjoy her, a rose by any other name an' all that...

Elizabeth is lovely.
We have an almost grown-up Elisabeth, who is now either Elisabeth or Libby. And Libby is lovely to use as a n/n.

Sometimes she got Lizzie when she was younger, and Liz from one friend.

We know other Elizabeths who are Lizzie (or sometimes Elle); and Buffy; and Beth.

Noleen · 14/07/2011 11:35

I LOVE Beth, it has such a feminine soft sound to it. But you must be the one that is happy. All the names are nice. I think Beth is the best but that is my personal opinion. You are not going to please everyone and will need to go with what you prefer in your heart. I'm having a hard time naming my second baby boy. It's so hard.

Karbea · 14/07/2011 11:46

Has to be Effy for me, love that nickname.

GruffaloReader · 14/07/2011 16:15

Ellie?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 14/07/2011 16:47

Betty and Betsy are my favourites.

Eliza is lovely, too.

Bandwithering · 14/07/2011 16:52

Libby or Beth

Bandwithering · 14/07/2011 16:55

ps Stick with Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a great name and she can be Eli, Eliza, Lizzie, Beth, Betsy, Libby.......

Isabella is so popular and there's only really Izzy or Bella. I love Bella though. Don't like Izzy at all and so many Isabellas end up being Izzies.

Mrsdp123 · 14/07/2011 22:46

I know an Elizabeth who is called Ibby or Ibs which I really like.

kiteflying · 15/07/2011 05:12

Change her name. It is breaking your heart, and other people will just have to get over it. Do it now. Isabella is lovely.

kiteflying · 15/07/2011 05:17

Bella is my DD's nn. Smile It still makes me feel the way I did when she was just born to call her my favourite name. I recommend it!

mumzy · 15/07/2011 18:50

All variations of Elizabeth:Elspeth (Scottish), Elsa, Liesel, Lisa (German) Isabel, Lisette, Elise, Babette (French), Isabella, Elisa (Spanish)

mumzy · 15/07/2011 18:52

The Queen's nn is Lilibet which i think is rather pretty

mathanxiety · 16/07/2011 06:13

Ishbel is lovely too.

Bonsoir · 16/07/2011 07:08

I love Elizabeth. DD's second name is Elisabeth (French spelling).

greasychip · 16/07/2011 09:39

What would you use as a nn for Isabella? Issy? Bella? Just use that for your daughter as her pet name as they are both fine for Elizabeth too.

phlossie · 16/07/2011 10:24

My little girl is Betty (nns for Beatrice though). Love it! Also like Libby and Lizzie.
