Can't choose a boys name :(

I really need some help as I can't think of any boys names that I love.

My surname is one syllable and begins with R. My dh loves the name Ryan. I don't hate it but don't think it sounds nice with surname.

A lot of the names I liked initially were vetoed by Dh as he once knew someone called that and they were 'insert random reason the person was to be disliked'.

Only 6 weeks to go and really need to come up with a short list. Help!

Joshua
Jonah
Ethan

Love those.

MelinaM · 11/07/2011 02:18

Modern / unusual or, traditional / classic?

PaperBank · 11/07/2011 06:54

Oliver, Jack, Aidan, Luke, Samuel, Liam, Jacob, Edward, Lewis, James?

Baby2b · 11/07/2011 07:18

Probably would lean towards more traditional names.

Then I am your fairy godmother. Duncan, Gavin or Adrian.

Baby2b · 11/07/2011 07:26

Samual, lewis and James are close family names. Aidan has been rejected by Dh as it is too popular in Scotland. :( Liam was also vetoed.

Dh likes strong masculine names (old fashioned, but not in a good way). So something like Finlay is a no Confused.

Does it matter of the child has the same initials as you?

Jonah is a perfect boy's name!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 11/07/2011 08:40

Sorry swash, you are wrong. Duncan is a perfect boys name Grin

Baby2b · 11/07/2011 12:57

Ok, I'm thinking so far

Jacob
Duncan
Ethan

What do people think?

I can't use Jonah, but agree it is a fab name.

NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 11/07/2011 13:25

why can't you use Jonah?

I like Ethan.

KateeTheBump · 11/07/2011 13:27

Jonah probably not a good name if there's any likelihood he might work at sea (think Jonah and the Whale)... Grin

Boys names are so bloody tricky. Having the same problem myself!

I don't think it matters too much about having the same initials at first, but you may end up opening eachother's post further down the line, so worth bearing that in mind?

KateeTheBump · 11/07/2011 13:28

Jonah supersitition

Emandwilliam · 11/07/2011 13:29

What about Alastair or Harry?

NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 11/07/2011 13:30

but Jonah survived! Grin

I like Murray (or Moray)

MooMooFarm · 11/07/2011 13:36

I like Jacob and Ethan as names, but would be put off by how popular they are at the moment...

What about traditional boys names which aren't 'in' or 'out* at the mo - am thinking

Sean
Michael
Christopher
Ben
Peter

for example!

Baby2b · 11/07/2011 13:36

Murray is a good name. Does anyone else find it hard as they have a big family and the good names are taken?

OP posts:
Baby2b · 11/07/2011 13:40

I was worried about the popularity, especially the twilight fad. Saying that I don't know anyone up here called Ethan.

I could list about 20 girls names I adore or use older family names. The older mens side of the family has nothing usable.

OP posts:
NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 11/07/2011 13:44

what are the boy's versions of those girl's names?

suzikettles · 11/07/2011 13:48

I don't get why your dh likes Ryan but says Aiden is too common.

Ryan was the joint 5th most popular boys name in Scotland last year. Aiden was 20th.

You can see the full list [http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/theme/vital-events/births/popular-names/2010/detailed-tables.html here]

suzikettles · 11/07/2011 13:50

I like:

Alexander (Alex or Sandy)
David
Angus
Duncan
Kenneth
Lachlan
Fergus

NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 11/07/2011 13:51

oh, I like Alexander, too, but I prefer the nn Xander/Zander.

seeker · 11/07/2011 13:52

Patrick
Aiden.
