Do you prefer Nat or Nate as nickname for Nathaniel?

I like both and can't make up my mind which to go with! Baby isn't here yet - should just hang on and see what seems to suit him once he's here do you think? I just feel like my older children would find Nat or Nate easier to get to grips with than Nathaniel as they are only little (33 months and 20 months at the time of posting). Plan is to start using the name in the weeks leading up to his arrival to help them understand what is happening (am 31 weeks at the moment).

How do you pronounce Nathaniel? Nate-anyal or Nath-anyal or Nat-anyal? And which nickname would sound more like the full name?

TanteRose · 04/07/2011 13:30

nate

and its pronounced Na-THAN-yal (with stress on the middle syllable)

WhipMeIndiana · 04/07/2011 13:32

Nate

Nat is girl's Nathalie

sonniebonnie · 04/07/2011 13:33

Thanks Tanterose. I've never actually met a Nathaniel.

tammy234 · 04/07/2011 13:37

I know a little Nat. Sounds more masculine to me, Nate is too close to Kate.

And there are no little Natashas or Natalies around these days, so kids won't know any female Nats.

StarryEyedMama · 04/07/2011 13:38

Nate is much nicer IMO :)

PipFEH · 04/07/2011 13:59

Oh dear. I am no less confused! My hubby has a definate preference for Nate (he says Nat sounds a bit harsh), so maybe I should just go with him as I am more neutral! My only reservation is that my hubby keeps saying 'Nate Dogg' in a tongue in cheek way and I worry that this will continue.........him and all his mates call each other by their surname, followed by dog (I know it sounds really sad, but it started off as a jokey stag do thing which has unfortunately stuck - some of them are really funny).

I think I mean he and all his mates, not him? Grammar not what it once was - baby brain....!

Nate

I love the name Nate.
People have often tried to shorten my name to Nat and I have always hated it. Sounds like 'gnat' in my mind. Plus it sounds really horrible when people don't pronounce their Ts.

browneyesblue · 04/07/2011 14:23

Nate - and if you really hate 'Nate Dogg', ask your husband to stop using it now, as your other children will start using it. Nip it in the bud while you still can :)

ja9 · 04/07/2011 14:31

I LOVE Nate...

SloganLogan · 04/07/2011 18:55

I like Nat. It's cool and snappy. Think of Nat King Cole the musician.

Nate reminds me of late, tates, mate.

FranSanDisco · 04/07/2011 18:57

I refer Nat.

PurpleStrawberry · 04/07/2011 20:39

Why not use both?!

My son is called Natanael and we use both nns.

pilates · 04/07/2011 20:44

Nat sounds modern and trendy

hugeleyoutnumbered · 04/07/2011 20:51

either

Chynah · 04/07/2011 22:26

Nate (biased though!)

andrewkcoolman · 13/12/2018 01:03

I would choose Nate. Nat reminds me too much of a gnat and an annoying person. A know a kid named nate that is cool to hang out with, and I know a kid named Nat that is really annoying and tries to get in everyones way

ja9r · 13/12/2018 07:04

Nate

Love Nate

Polkasq · 13/12/2018 08:01

ZOMBIE THREAD!

This child is 7 years old do you really think they want suggestions on his nickname still!?

TurquoiseWeekend · 13/12/2018 13:42

I love Nate so much. I'd use it as a stand-alone name myself if it wasn't so close to my own name.
