Bonkers name?

I like very unusual names and am considering calling my soon to be born son Atticus - after the noble lawyer character in To Kill A Mockingbird. Any views? The other front runners have been Phoenix (like the hippyness) and Lydon (after lead singer of Sex Pistols).

Shit. Just realised Cosmo is the name of the chain of Chinese buffets!

mangomousse · 21/06/2011 20:50

I do think you have to give some consideration to the fact that the cute little bundle with the trendy name that people coo over will grow up into a hairy great lump via the grunting teenage stage and then become a grumpy old man (ok sweeping generalisations but ykwim)

Would you want to stand at the bar and have somebody shout "Hey Tiberius/Atticus/Ptolomy do you want a beer"?

cece · 21/06/2011 20:55

I don't get this need for an unusual name. Just choose something you like!

My suggestion - John Smile You never meet a little one!

mopsyflopsy · 21/06/2011 21:25

But cece, John is actually very unusual these days Smile.

And the reason for needing a name that isn't already used by thousands others is that the whole point of naming someone is identify him/her.

mopsyflopsy · 21/06/2011 21:27

Very likely these guys would be known by nicknames just like all the Theodores, Alexanders and Quentins are often known by nicknames.

YaMaYaMa · 21/06/2011 21:32

Digby? Digby?

YaMaYaMa · 21/06/2011 21:33

Digby.

I...just...fucking...Digby?

bagelmonkey · 21/06/2011 21:40

The old psychiatric hospital in Exeter was called Digby.

Stangirl · 21/06/2011 21:45

yama I only thought of Digby because I met a man called it and thought it was really cool.

cece but I like unusual names! My name was highly unusual when I was young but now it's common as muck. I loved having a rare name.

I also really liked Titus - but I know someone called it already.

PIMSoclock · 21/06/2011 22:02

What about Lyndon instead of lydon???Smile

PIMSoclock · 21/06/2011 22:04

Whops!! Sorry for the double post!!

BuntyPenfold · 21/06/2011 23:09

Atticus is a nice name , but he wouldn't be the only one here, if that is what you want.
I think it is quite popular now.
As another poster said, John is really unusual now' I don't know any under 35.

Actually I have a friend with a son called Lydon, for the same reason. And his name suits him, and it's just his name. And not a dog's name!

munstersmum · 22/06/2011 11:14

Like Atticus. Like Digby.

Lydon will just get nn of lie down....

friendcat · 22/06/2011 11:25

go for it.

My grandparents (who regularly berate me for my poor choice of names for my DCs) gave their children "good, solid traditional names that won't date".

Hello Shirley, Tracy, Nigel and Brian.

Crawling · 22/06/2011 14:23

I just thought I would say I have a Phoenix (personally prefer it as a girls name and used it for dd) I was told she would be teased she is not in fact everone in school loves it and it is never misspelled unlike my DS Matthew who everyone spells wrong.

You have two choices you can have unanimous approval and go with the no 1 name for the past 10 years have 3 or 4 in his class or you have a unusual name and accept that not everyone will like it. I personally think it is a crying shame that the top 10 names are so common being used by thousands of babies every year when there are thousands of beautiful names that go unused and they are not always names you think are unusual either just not used much at the moment.

OneHelluvaBroad · 22/06/2011 19:16

Atticus is great.

Lydon is awful. Phoenix is OK, but a bit 'we fancy ourselves as rock stars' for my liking.

BuntyPenfold · 22/06/2011 20:55

Well, perhaps Crawling's Phoenix will be a rock star :)

Lonnie · 22/06/2011 20:59

I like Atticus

DitaVonCheese · 22/06/2011 23:48

I love Atticus but it's beyond wanky. Plus not that uncommon.

Phoenix is just terrible, sorry.

Jethro and Digby are both ACE. I would have either for DC2 except DH is a Jethro (and loves his name) and he reckons that Digby is the biggest dog in the world Hmm (I am younger than him, this means nothing to me).

I also like John for DC2 but DH is having none of that either. Meh.

Stangirl · 23/06/2011 09:08

For those of you that say Atticus is not uncommon - where do you live? Are you in the US? I've never heard it anywhere but there.

How about Marlowe?

All horrible I'm afraid

cumbria81 · 23/06/2011 10:39

It's a ridiculous, pompous name. Your child will inwardly cringe before introducing themselves for the REST OF THEIR LIFE.
