Jamie, for a girl?

I like gender neutral girl names, we've got Taylor, Bailey, Flynn, Reese on our list, all slightly unusual (at least in our circle) and all go well with our daughters name too, but DH suggested Jamie and straight away I just thought YES!

I think people are expecting us to go with one of the names I've listed, and I can imagine their reaction to Jamie would be a bit WTF but it goes perfectly with our slightly unusual surname and it just sounds like she's a person already, iykwim, instantly familiar.

What do you think oh General Public? :o

But those names are not gender neutral - they're all boy's names? Jamie is the only neutral one. It's a nice name in itself, but your daughter will have to put up with a lifetime of 'oh I thought you'd be a boy!' I wouldn't do it in a million years, sorry!

They are gender neutral in the US

They are boys' names. There is a growing trend for people to give girls boys' names.

Leave some names just for the boys, I say.

I knew one girl called Jamie in high school but I wouldn't exactly say she was a nice person though.

OP, I know a female Jamie, I am very used to it as a female name, so yes, it works for me as a girl's name. I do think most people will assume boy when hearing the name, but that goes for a whole heap of names, so so what.

I really like the name Jamie for a boy or a girl (I too like gender neutral names), but I personally would use the Jaime spelling for a girl.

I know female Taylor and Baileys at DD s school. I also used to go to school with a little girl called Jamie def heard it used for both sexes .

I like it. You could spell it jaime? Isn't that the American female way to spell it? Like jaime lee Curtis?

I have a cousin in Barbados called Jamie (girl) spelt that way. When I look at Jaime, I think Jame!!

FWIW my daughter is called Marley, which I've heard of as being used for boys. Never had any gender confusion.....in what kind of context would people make the assumption? On a C.V? That's the only thing I can think of....

The famous Jaime that I can think of is the American actress Jaime Pressly (My name is Earl).

Don't get me wrong, I like the name a lot as it happens. I think it sounds lovely and is very pretty for a girl. I just think that the overwhelming general public opinion is still that it's a boys name. I don't think the gender cross over is anywhere near complete yet.

I thought I'd never know of a female Jaimie, then I realised there is Jaimie Lee Curtis; a name I accept without a thought. Use the name if you like it. People will adapt.

Love it. Tho would probably go for Jaymie/Jaime/Jayme rather than Jamie, just to make it more obviously female.

Incidentally, I would presume Taylor to be a girls name, Bailey could be either, but Reese and Flynn are a bit TOO boyish ifkwim

When I was younger I knew quite a few girl Jamies. Far more than boy ones.

I don't know if the trend has reversed in the last 10-15 years or so but it was definitely gender neutral leaning towards a girls name to me in the 90s.

Taylor and Bailey are very popular girls' names in the US - far more for girls than for boys. Reece and Flynn I've never heard for girls (except Reece Witherspoon)

My neice is Jaime, she is great and I love the name. Now whenever I hear of a Jamie I'm going to meet I'm always surprised it's a boy. Grin
