What do you think of Bronte for a girl?

Do you only want postive opinions op? You sound a bit snippy.
Sorry, can I say Chavvy? That's what comes to mind.

pfishofplight · 09/06/2011 15:51

Are you sure it's an umlaut? I thought it was a diaresis?

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 15:58

I want all kinds of opinions but I don't like nastiness for the sake of it.
The type of diaeresis you are thinking of is a trema (diacritic). Not sure because I'm not a language expert but I know it makes an ee sound in this case!

By the way, I am the furthest from "Chavvy" as you can get!

I think it is pretentious. Makes me think of parents who are trying to be posh/ middle class, but actually aren't. (sorry to be snobby!)

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 16:02

That's ok scarlettsmummys2. You can be snobby about it if you like. I had comments like that over my name when i was growing up but now I'm an adult every likes it and thinks it's unusual. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Smile

OP posts:
scarlettsmummy2 · 09/06/2011 16:14

Sorry- I hadn't read all the comments- didn't realise you had actually picked it! I think it is unusual but just reminds me of a tv programme I watched a couple of years ago about children doing the eleven plus and the mother on that had called her daughter Bronte and she was a bit full of herself. She just kind of struck me as exactly the kind of person who would call their child Bronte. She was dressed immaculately, all oatmeal linen, house like a showhome and put on well spoken accent, but it was clear that her life had not always been like that. Sorry for any offence caused!

BelleEnd · 09/06/2011 16:15

I don't think anyone has been nasty for here. You asked if we like it. Opinions were stated. As for the pronounciation, two posters have said that they'd say Brontay and not Brontee- If I was pg and considering a name, and someone pointed out that there were different possibilities with pronounciations, I'd really appreciate being told!

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 16:17

No problem scarlettsmummy2. I do understand what you mean, but just like it! Smile

vigglewiggle · 09/06/2011 16:18

I think you should re-write your OP inserting the words positive and only. There is no point asking for opinions if you are going to get so defensive.

QOD · 09/06/2011 16:20

DD has a friend (12) called Bronte - she is Bron Tea (pronounced not spelt!!) and teachers constantly call her Bron Tay which she hates and corrects!

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 16:24

I like the pronunciation I have chosen thank you BelleEnd because that is how the spelling dictates it should be pronouned.

I did want all opinions but now I feel there are certain parties here who are more interested in getting at me for questioning the bad opinions of the name!

I thought these were discussion threads where you could question opinions etc, not just accept people being personal and calling you chavvy etc!

Not a doormat and don't intend to start being one for a few people on MN who want to get personal!

OP posts:
BelleEnd · 09/06/2011 16:29

Nobody is getting personal though! I'm not saying that either pronounciation is right or wrong... Just that you will get people using the other one occasionally, and perhaps that might irk you. It's something your child will have to face... Thought you might like to know that!

No-one has called you chavvy... Their opinion of the name, which you wanted opinions on, was that it is chavvy.

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 16:32

So am I reading "You sound a bit snippy. Sorry, can I say Chavvy?" wrong then?!

Being nice again BelleEnd? Thank you. That was the kind of response I thought I would get from MNers

OP posts:
BelleEnd · 09/06/2011 16:34

BTW, I think the diaeresis on the 'e' is there to distinguish it from being a single-syllable name. Comes from Brunty, iirc...

BelleEnd · 09/06/2011 16:37

I read that post as that you sounded snippy and that the name was chavvy since poster had started a new line. If I was wrong, I apologize.

I have not been unkind to you, OP. I hate squabbling on MN and find it unnecessary. I'm sorry if your feelings are hurt- If I started name threads for the names of my children, I would be upset as some would not like them. That is why I have never started such threads.

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 16:39

Like I've said I am no language expert, but I do know that Patrick Bronte changed the name from Brunty (like it says in Wikipedia!) for the reason you said, but this also makes the pronunciation the way I said.

Don't know why you really care so much about the pronunciation of a strangers suggested name!!

OP posts:
BelleEnd · 09/06/2011 16:42

Okaaaaaaaaaaaay.

We obviously have very different opinions on what the name threads are for. In future, I shall try only to give positive opinions to your name threads.

FWIW, good luck with your daughter... It's a nice name. :)

Renaissance227 · 09/06/2011 16:43

I've had enough of certain people going on and on trying to get the last word and my baby and I ceratinly don't need tension from MN.
If you don't like Bronte then fine.
If you do that's fine too.
I give up!

OP posts:
pfishofplight · 09/06/2011 16:43

I said the name was chavvy. Nothing personal. And you have been very snippy with posters who don't like the name.

You then told me you were far from a chav Hmm

I knew it wasn't an umlaut Grin

BelleEnd · 09/06/2011 16:45

LAST WORD.

:o

PrisonerZero · 09/06/2011 16:46

I love it, not heard of anyone called it before but as soon as I saw the thread title I thought it was nice.

I'd step away from Baby Name threads OP and whatever you do, don't ever entertain the idea of starting a thread in AIBU.

Yes, my pronunciation would fall somewhere between the two if I'm honest. Up to you which way you would want it said though, obviously :)
