The Rev Hallelujah Dawson is a character in "Unnatural Death" by Dorothy L Sayers.

or Eureka

You're going to think I'm making this up, but I do in fact know kids with the following names:

Blessing
Amen
Glory
Hallelujah (Glory and Hallelujah are siblings)
Precious
Royal
Prince
Princess (Prince & Princess are also siblings)
Concepta

And no, I don't live in some weird religious cult ashram, just inner London.

Frogs - wow at some of those!!

I lived in Botswana for a while and knew of:

Lovemore
Life
Bikini
Mummy
Justice

I went to university with a girl called;

Princess Princetta

She, too, was Nigerian.

"I don't mind it being "funny" in school.

Oh good. Let's hope your dd shares your feelings.

When will people remember that it's not them who has to go through life being called something insane like "Hosanna ', which isn't even a name. it's their child. Who often isn;t even born yet, so you ahve no idea whether they will be the sort of person who can carry off being called something bonkers, or the sort of person who would rather sit quitely and unnoticed in a corner, and who will dread anybody saying "What's your name?" for the next 80 years.

pinkthechaffinch · 27/05/2011 21:13

I think Alleluia would be a very pretty name.

FessaEst · 27/05/2011 21:18

I went to school with a Shoshannah.

NomadInNowhere · 27/05/2011 21:21

My husband's family is Nigerian but fortunately he wants an English name. I think we will going with something simple, we like Anna and Benjamin. Our first DD also has an English name. I think it depends also a little on where you intend to live. If you are in London where there is a lot of multiculturalism then maybe a name like that might not sound so different. If you are going to live in a quaint little English village, it might not go down so well.

I use to call my rabbit Ebenezer (named by my brother) what about that? :)

LadyOfTheCuntryManor · 27/05/2011 21:45

It's interesting that you assume that;

a) I'm English
b) Live in a quaint little English town

Oh and Seeker, it'll become a name when I warrant it as such. Wendy wasn't a name until Peter Pan was written and look how that took off.

I didnt assume anything, read again : I think it depends also a little on where you intend to live. If you are in London where there is a lot of multiculturalism then maybe a name like that might not sound so different. If you are going to live in a quaint little English village, it might not go down so well. I was comparing how it might be accepted in different situations. Don't see what the problem is with that, Was just trying to make a contribution for what it's worth.

K999 · 27/05/2011 21:53

Were there really no "Wendy's" until JM Barrie wrote Peter Pan??

pooka · 27/05/2011 21:56

Wendy was a name completely made up by J M Barrie.

LadyOfTheCuntryManor · 27/05/2011 22:06

Barrie invented it for the purpose of his character.

seeker · 27/05/2011 22:09

I agree. Wendy wasn;t a name until Peter Pan.

But Wendy isn;t a word with a meaning. It's not a word that appears in Christmand carols.

pooka · 27/05/2011 22:10

The 'Ho' of the name would bother me.

baskingseals · 27/05/2011 22:13

have to say it makes me think of hosepipes. or even panty-hose.

CeliaDeBohun · 27/05/2011 23:08

baskingseals Same here! Or 'hose', as worn by Tudor gentlemen.

DaisySteiner · 27/05/2011 23:10

It's a myth that Barrie 'invented' the name Wendy, he merely popularised it.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 28/05/2011 07:01

Grin at the incongruity of the desire for a biblical name and your current nickname.

JamieAgain · 28/05/2011 07:12

I think , for me, the issue isn't the unusualness of the name Hosanna, but the fact it doesn't sound all that nice, to my ears.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 28/05/2011 16:02

My though, too. But I'll be a lone voice in saying that I like Hosanna. Sadly, it was on the 'no way in a million years she'll get teased' list of DH's...
