Shortened nickname ideas for Artemisia?

Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 13:35

I've finally found a girl name I like - Artemisia (it's Persian). But DP wants to know what it could be shortened to as a nickname, ideas?

Is Arty just for boys? I don't like missy.

:)

Temi?

WowOoo · 20/05/2011 13:39

Arty could be for girls too, why not?
Temi unusual but nice. Missy OK for when she's playing up!

MamaLazarou · 20/05/2011 13:40

Arts? Aarti is quite a popular Hindi name, so no, not just for boys.

poppydaisy · 20/05/2011 14:08

Lovely name. Artie is very cute imo.

oohlaalaa · 20/05/2011 14:08

Are you or DP Iranian?

If you are not Iranian I would consider the name very pretentious. Sorry to be mean.

GetOrfMoiCase · 20/05/2011 14:16

Ithink Artemisia is Italian - there was a 16thC painter called Artemisia Gentileschi, she was Italian.

I don't think it is pretentious, a bit poncey maybe, but nothing wrong with poncey names in my book.

I would necessarily choose a name based on what the shortened versions are likely to me. Nicknames come from nowhere and have no basis in logic. My dd is called Sophia and her nickname (for obscure reasons) is Johnny.

GetOrfMoiCase · 20/05/2011 14:16

likely to be

Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 14:25

oohlalaa - yes I am Iranian, and my first, middle and surname is persian. Thanks. Because of this, I don't want to give up my heritage completely, just because I am living in England. (I am aware that Scherezadea is actually the turkish version of Sharzahd, i just like it!)

Artemisia I was a Grand Admiral in the Persian Army, ruler of Helicarnissus the greek state under the king Xerxes.

More info on Artemisia and persian queens/female warriors can be found here www.mani.tk

Artemisia I ruled around 450BC, so 2500 years ago. I am a bit of an ancient history geek :o

Thanks everyone, good ideas, and it's good to have input! Obviously my family all think it's great, but they'd like any persian name haha! :)

She'd have DP's English surname, but I think it goes well. If it's a boy he'll be called Cyrus :)

mia is a possible nickname perhaps?

DireLemma · 20/05/2011 14:30

Mizzy instead of Missy

Like Arty/Artie

Timmy (if shes a tomboy!)

jaffacake79 · 20/05/2011 14:31

I think it's a lovely unusual name that celebrates your heritage!
Temi is a nice shortening of it :)

Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 14:37

oooh, i love Mia :) Temi is a bit close to Tammy, which makes me think of the shop haha. Timmy is a nice idea too. Ahh, I LOVE MN :o

Can't wait for the next scan to find out the sex, only 2 weeks to go!!

I wanted an inspirational name, a powerful/great woman. The other idea is Shirin, who is the first female judge in Iran and won a Nobel peace prize for her efforts in womens rights there. but Shirin was my grandmother, so that rules it out lol

Scheherezadea - seeing that you are Iranian the name is not pretentious at all. My best friends mother is Italian, and she has a very long and unusual Italian name. If both parents were English, I'd find it pretentious, but I thinks its nice as first name and surname celebrate both parents heritage.

GetOrfMoiCase · 20/05/2011 15:10

Sorry OP I didn't read in your OP that it was an Iranian name as well Blush

I think it is a beautiful name, however I think Scheherezade is also a beautioful name (is that your name irl?)

Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 15:10

Thanks :) x

Oh well, just got to wait and see what DP says, he's currently half shrugged/said no in a very non-committal way to every single baby name idea, including his own!

getorfmoicase Scheherezadea is the princess in 1001 nights, who tells the stories of Sinbad, Aladdin etc. It's not my name, I wish it were! It's actually turkish i think, the Persian is Sharzahd but I don't think that's as pretty. I did suggest Scheherezadea, but DP quickly shot it down, as both his mum & sister are quite dyslexic!

It was actually a last ditch attempt at finding a username on here that wasn't taken..!

Wikipedia - "In Sir Richard F. Burton's translation of The Nights, Shahrazad was described in this way:

"[Shahrazad] had perused the books, annals and legends of preceding Kings, and the stories, examples and instances of by gone men and things; indeed it was said that she had collected a thousand books of histories relating to antique races and departed rulers. She had perused the works of the poets and knew them by heart; she had studied philosophy and the sciences, arts and accomplishments; and she was pleasant and polite, wise and witty, well read and well bred."

Um ... not that it's not a very pretty name, but just in case, you do know that the English name for Artemisia is 'wormwood', right? It's the stuff you make Absinthe out of.

Probably not obvious enough to put you off but thought I ought to say it now.

bonnetarte · 20/05/2011 15:19

misia( Meesha)

GetOrfMoiCase · 20/05/2011 15:22

I love that name Scheherezadea, it is on my fantasy list of girls names, and if I ever have fantasy twins, I will name them Sheherezadea and Dunyazade. And I am not from Iran, I am from Devon. But I love the 1001 nights.

Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 15:31

Haha! Everyone loves storybook names :) I also love Luthien, from Tolkiens Silmarillion/LOTR.

Or, you know, Flynn and Cora for twins, from Tron :o

OP posts:
Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 15:34

LRD -I looked it up as a plant name cause I noticed it on a google search, but i think it's a collection of plant species right, that includes tarragon and sage aswell as wormwood?

I secretly quite like the absinthe link too, although I wouldn't mention that to my (religious, teetotal) family, lol

Izzy would be a nice nickname for Artemisia too - but would sound quite normal and not stand out ifyswim...
