Shortened nickname ideas for Artemisia?

I've finally found a girl name I like - Artemisia (it's Persian). But DP wants to know what it could be shortened to as a nickname, ideas?

Is Arty just for boys? I don't like missy.

:)

Artemisia is the name of plant, and also an adaption of the name Artemis, it is of Greek origin. It has been adopted by a few other cultures; namely Spanish and Italian.

Beautiful name, and I love the nn ArtieSmile

LRDTheFeministDragon · 20/05/2011 16:08

Yes, it's the whole family of plants that taste like aniseed, basically. I just thought I'd mention it in case you didn't know - for me personally it's another nice layer of meaning. Smile It's a lovely name.

Scheherezadea · 20/05/2011 16:10

I thought it might be greek, my dad says it would be Amitis in persian, but not as nice as Artemisia.

Plus she ruled over Greece, so I suppose that makes it more fitting.

I'm glad you like it, just hope DP does! I'd like to have the baby named before it's delivered!

Oh don't tell DP, just present it as a fait accompli 2 minutes after the birth, he wouldn't argue with you then Wink

lambethlil · 20/05/2011 16:37

Its great and you could shorten it to:

Artie
Missy
Mia
Mimi or
Timmy!

Nefret · 23/05/2011 11:35

Artemisia is a lovely name and to be honest I wouldn't shorten it all. If I had to though I think I would shorten it to Misia, that sounds really nice too.

I know a woman called Arti.

And another called Mizzy.

CoteDAzur · 23/05/2011 12:04

Congratulations Scheherezadea Smile

You can still use Shirin - lovely way to honor her grandmother. Does "Shirin" mean "cute" in Persian like it does in Turkish?

I would have loved the name Scheherazade for DD - great role model, a strong woman who used her intellect to triumph in a dangerous situation - but its spelling is a nightmare.

devoncreamtea · 23/05/2011 12:37

what about Mia or mimi as n-names?

Scheherezadea · 24/05/2011 13:14

Well after all that, DP has decided against it! really quite annoyed with him, he says it's too 'wierd'. He likes Isabelle. Because apparently Isabelle Thompson reflects both our cultural heritages (Isabelle being obviously not a persian name).

Can't help but think he'll find every single name that isn't Jane, Sarah or Emily 'wierd'.

OP posts:
charitygirl · 24/05/2011 13:22

Well if he wants her to have the same name as every fifth girl, then fine!

Am feeling huffy on your behalf! Arty would be so sweet, and the whole name is beautiful. With a name as English as Thompson, she MUST have a Persian first name!

Scheherezadea · 24/05/2011 13:44

Thanks! yes, am quite put out myself! Sent him a huffy email, telling him it's no more 'wierd' than my name, and so far he's turned down every single persian name I've come up with.

Also, tbf he only likes Cyrus because you can get away with it as an English name. He strops that he wants to have an english name in there somewhere (first or last) and doesn't want it to have a cmopletely persian name, because then there's no link to him, but has no problem suggesting it has a wholly english name..!!

grr.

Thanks Lula - I've already suggested Sohreh and Tahminah - similar to your list, but he doesn't like. I don't think he would like any of the others.

Oh well. I'm giving up now, leavig him to think about it until baby is born. Got scan a week on friday when we'll find out the sex.

What about English sounding Lila, Farah, or Roxana for a girl, or Kian or Kasper for a boy?

Scheherezadea · 24/05/2011 14:17

Lila is similar to Lily, which is the name of his dog lol. Farah is my cousins name, I've suggested Roxana but neither keen as we both knew a not-nice Roxanne at school! Think we're settled on Cyrus for a boy, at least!

DinglyDangly · 24/05/2011 14:25

lets hope the scan doesnt let you down and you dont have to have an argument about Isabelle then!

whackamole · 24/05/2011 20:45

I like it, and any of the shortened versions.

My aunt is Artemis, her nn is 'Ughda' !!!!! Sorry can't really spell it, needless to say compared to Artemis it is vile!

after8itsbliss · 25/05/2011 10:33

What about Alayna? I know an Iranian girl with that name and think it is very pretty. Tara also very nice, though don't know if they are strictly Persian names.

umf · 25/05/2011 21:23

Time to throw the toys out of the pram. It's a fabulous name.

Scheherezadea · 25/05/2011 21:24

I wish I could 'like' your reply, Umf!

How about Sia (See-ah) as the nick name? I'm assuming you are pronouncing Artemisia as R-teh-me-see-ah?

It's a lovely classic beautiful name and I really like it. Shame I'm not having any more DCs and that I have an Alethea Grin
