from previous thread we now accept cecily and cecilia are 2 independent stand alone names .

but which to go for oh prefers one i prefer the other and can't see the point of putting cecilia on bc if we're not going to use it and just going to call her cecily any way.problem is dh likes cecilia more because it feels more elaborate , i prefer cecily because it is less affected elaborate . dh dislikes cecily because it is too gentle , i dislike cecilia because it's not sweet gentle enough. so while we agree on the pros and cons of each name we are divided on how we feel about each name if that makes sense .

which do you prefer and why . we have agreed that the mumsnet verdict will be final as we could both accept live with either .

Or just Celia.

ditheringdonkey · 17/05/2011 08:31

celia is ok but i'm not as fond of it as cecily or cecilia . i think we would somewhere between ser sea li ah and seh seal yah iyswim

another potential problem with cecilia is other people spelling it incorrectly as cecelia which mmight condemn her to life time of having to say cecilia spelt c-e-c-c-i-l-i -a

I think that Cecily Annabel is lovely.

Also Cecily (H)Anna(h), Cecily Elizabeth.

Camerondiazepam · 17/05/2011 13:23

What if she can't say her "s"s? And is doomed to a life of having to spell her name? And be roundly mocked for NOT BEING ABLE TO SAY HER OWN NAME?!

Thtear clear of 'em both, I thay!

there are a whole host of speech impediments a child could potentially have. you can't not choose a name just in case your child has one of them! that would be ridiculous.

in the unlikely event of it happening, if it was a huge issue for her, then I am sure that the OP and her husband would not mind at all if she wanted to use one of her middle names.

NerfHerder · 17/05/2011 13:40

Cecily- it is delightful.

petitdonkey · 17/05/2011 13:44

This thread is making my head hurt!!! I have to keep reading carefully to differentiate between the two! They are both lovely names - I agree that you can't choose the nicknames (I put Lydia as a middle name for DD1 after too many people said Lids as a nn, wish I hadn't as I still love it)

DD2 was nearly Cecilia as I love it but DH didn't - we named her Camilla but her nn is now Cece and I still sing 'Oh Cecelia' to her all the time!! DS only ever calls her Moo. (MillaMoo)

JanMorrow · 17/05/2011 17:03

I prefer Cecily, precisely because I like her in The Importance of Being Ernest!

thanks mrsvwoolf you've just put the cat among the pigeons only problem i can see with using cecilia is she then uses the nn celia which although i don't dislike i much prefer cecily

I would come up with a different name because you can't agree. Otherwise one of you is always going to be irritated. I like both Cecily and Cecilia fwiw.

Cicely, then Cecily, then Cecelia. Have an aunt called Celia who hates it, so that probably isn't helping. Also know sweet little girl called CiCi (like SeeSee), whose name is Cicely. If you pick the nn yourself, then CC, CiCi or CeCe is never going to be Sissy?
