from previous thread we now accept cecily and cecilia are 2 independent stand alone names .

but which to go for oh prefers one i prefer the other and can't see the point of putting cecilia on bc if we're not going to use it and just going to call her cecily any way.problem is dh likes cecilia more because it feels more elaborate , i prefer cecily because it is less affected elaborate . dh dislikes cecily because it is too gentle , i dislike cecilia because it's not sweet gentle enough. so while we agree on the pros and cons of each name we are divided on how we feel about each name if that makes sense .

which do you prefer and why . we have agreed that the mumsnet verdict will be final as we could both accept live with either .

Very pretty names. Personally I think Cecilia "flows" better with your surname and fits better with Lydia and Tabitha.

Cecily - I prefer the sound and it does not make that song come into my head like Cecilia does

Be aware it will be shorted to cess - I went to university with a Cecily who was known as cess-pit

tabitha gets tabs at school never at home

so we have a history of picking names with problematic shortenings

not sure most children near us would know what a cesspit was

the song maryz actually endears cecilia to me can just imagine singing it to her when she's in the midst of the terrible twos,or a hormonal teenager etc

swaying towards cecilia on her bc as it gives her more options as she grows older but always using cecily as her name at home . also if we use cecilia and call her cecily both dh and i are happy with the outcome but will this cause her unneccessary confusion when form filling etc

dh vetoed cicely as being too close to sis sissy and sicily

the problem if we call her cecilia we run the risk that she chooses celia or cecilia and cecily is consigned to history .
in much the same as if you choose charlotte because you loved lottie and planned to use lottie but she then ends up as charlie or charlotte .

also think cecily annabel flows better than cecilia annabel .but cecilia goes better with our surname than cecily less hissy

Ditheringdonkey - I'm afraid you cant choose the nn.

My mum's parents chose an unusual first name for her, with a nn they loved, but my mum chose as a teenager to use her second name (Ann). My DH has a nickname which has no connection to his actual name, he's had it since primary school, and everyone uses this nickname.

You can start with Cecily, but it may not stick.

To me Cecilia and Cecily are very different names. All the Cecilias I know are called Cecilia or Celia. Cecily sounds completely different to my ears.

Both nice names, but if you prefer Cecily, name her Cecily (not Cecilia).

I think that Cecily "goes" better with your surname-and your other daughters fantastic names tbh.

They would be three feminine but not fussy/frilly names.

I originally preferred Cecilia but now I know the mn and sibs names I think you should go for Cecily.

Cecilia Annabel doesn't work - they run into each other when you say them.

Cecily, Lydia and Tabitha sound much better together (all 3 syllables but different endings).

I think Cecily sounds the stronger and more direct of the two actually, because it's shorter. Cecilia sounds so fussy.

With your surname, Cecelia would be my choice. Cecelia Annabel is lovely. It's formal but still feminine. Cecily Annabel is a little sing-songy.

i think we are going with cecily as it just feels shorter less frilly easier to say and more down to earth than cecilia . it is unlikely to be shortened to celia which neither dh or i are keen on. also not convinced cecilia and annabel flow well together too many As . finally if i hear dh sing oh cecilia again i'll throttle him.

but we may change the middle name to something more solid not sure what yet possibly anne/anna. any other suggestions .

Another vote for Cecily if it still counts, and I do much prefer Cecily Anna to Cecily Annabel.
