What Do We Think Of Minnie? Is It Always A Mouse?

I'm 26 weeks along with DC3 who is (probably, according to scan) a little girl.

We are struggling somewhat on girls' names we both like & last night I resorted to doing a bit of "ancestry research" into old family names on DH's side (I pretty much know all on my side - well my mum does - and none of them are possibilities Sad). The only one that I've found & am considering is Minnie. What do you think? Is it a good name or will people forever say "as in the mouse?" Confused.

Both DS1 & DS2 have recycled family names so in a way in would be nice for DC3 to have one too.

Any comments greatly appreciated Grin.

Round here it's commonly used childhood slang for the female genitals. And I do mean commonly used - I reckon everyone in ds's year 5 class would giggle if a new girl called Minnie turned up.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/05/2011 11:27

In my mind it's a mouse or, ironically, a fat old woman.

MrsKwazii · 13/05/2011 11:27

Yep it's a car or a fanjo

donnie · 13/05/2011 11:28

I'm with seeker; in this household it is the term for girls' bits.

Sorry.

seeker · 13/05/2011 11:28

It was my late grandmother's name - ds has to work on keeping a straight face every time we look at family photographs!

MelinaM · 13/05/2011 11:31

Most definitely a mouse, and too cutesy for my liking ..it will date terribly!

How about Minerva?

ChristinaEliopolis · 13/05/2011 11:32

Fanjo Smile

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 13/05/2011 11:33

Fanjo or dog.

MollysChamber · 13/05/2011 11:34

What if she grows up to be more, er, maxi?

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 13/05/2011 11:34

So, that'd be a resounding DON'T USE IT! Sorry. :)

emmanumber3 · 13/05/2011 11:35

Haha Blush. Sounds like it's a good job I asked! There are a few Minnie's in the DS's schools & I've never heard of it meaning fanjo in these parts BUT now that I know that pretty much rules it out Grin. I'm not cruel.

To be fair, it's not a name I would have thought of if it wasn't in the family at some point.

Many thanks for your honesty Grin.

Minnie to me is Minnie Riperton and a recent astrophysics graduate I know. Never heard of the fanjo link before but I'm a bit indifferent anyway - some people called theirs a jenny at school but noone went for the Jennifers. Likewise Will/Williams. It isn't as if you're calling her Vangina (as my grandma would say).

mummyofthemay · 13/05/2011 22:01

I like it, though I've never heard of a fanjo reference Hmm

valiumbandwitch · 13/05/2011 22:05

it's a lula, or a moaning minnie.

5DollarShake · 14/05/2011 06:43

My friend's sister has called her (now 9 mo) DD Minnie, and I've never had the heart to ask if they're aware of the fanjo association. To be fair, if I didn't come in MN I wouldn't be, but still. Once you know, you can't go back.

slovenlydotcom · 14/05/2011 06:57

I just thought of Minnie Driver

belgo · 14/05/2011 07:01

It's fine. I've heard of it short for Minerva.

FollowMe · 14/05/2011 07:16

I thought of fanjo too!

LunaticIsOnTheGrass · 14/05/2011 07:22

Its a fanjo where I grew up as well.

kitkatya · 14/05/2011 07:22

Me too. Which is a shame as it's a cute name. What about Millie?

saffy85 · 14/05/2011 07:33

My first thought was another word for lady garden. Sorry!

IngridBergman · 14/05/2011 07:34

Such a nice name but yes sadly the mums of girls at school had this discussion the other week and it transpires ALL of their children use it to mean - erm - that. Who knew.
I have boys and they only know it in terms of the car.

slovenlydotcom · 14/05/2011 07:47

perhaps there is an argument for teaching our daughters the correct names for parts of their body

girlscout · 14/05/2011 07:56

mini me, minnie ripperton minnie cauldwell (ols lady in the snug at the rovers return)...
Do you have to use the name formally?
Choose a "proper" name and then shorten to min .
Maybe you can go back a bit further in your families for the name for your dd.

ElsieR · 14/05/2011 08:28

Love it.
