What Do We Think Of Minnie? Is It Always A Mouse?

I'm 26 weeks along with DC3 who is (probably, according to scan) a little girl.

We are struggling somewhat on girls' names we both like & last night I resorted to doing a bit of "ancestry research" into old family names on DH's side (I pretty much know all on my side - well my mum does - and none of them are possibilities Sad). The only one that I've found & am considering is Minnie. What do you think? Is it a good name or will people forever say "as in the mouse?" Confused.

Both DS1 & DS2 have recycled family names so in a way in would be nice for DC3 to have one too.

Any comments greatly appreciated Grin.

I like it. I would worry about the fanjo think, there are loads od dicks and willys out there. I have a neice who is a minnie short for wilhemina (sp?).

seeker · 14/05/2011 09:40

Hang on. Are there seriously people out there who would still use this name once they realized that it was a commonly used euphemism for the female genitalia? Seriously?

I look forward to meeting Minnie's twin brother, Roger.

It's my name, and i can honestly say it has never come up, the lady bits connection. i only ever heard of it on here. nobody has ever laughed when i told them my name.honest.

mamma2boyz · 14/05/2011 18:00

I love it, but got the exact same reaction when I suggested it...luckily I think I am having a boy so will not get a chance to use it - really thought it would be lovely for the little one of the family to be called Minnie, but apparently it is girly bits to lots of people!!!
So annoying x

pickyourbrain · 14/05/2011 18:50

Either a mouse? Or a cutsey slang for vagina.

pinkytheshrinky · 14/05/2011 18:53

fanjo word

mummissinghermind · 14/05/2011 19:05

My DH has just informed me it means little girl in urdu, i love it.

Tortoise · 14/05/2011 19:10

DD2 get called Minnie as a shortened version of her name, Yazmin.

mich54321 · 14/05/2011 20:06

Minnie is a variant of Mary,Melinda,Minerva,Miriam and Wilhelmina - not sure if you like any of these. You could then use Minnie as a nn - I thought of Minnie Mouse, never heard of the other meaning ... maybe it depends where you live ? or maybe I'm naive

GastonTheLadybird · 14/05/2011 20:08

Fanjo slang here too. What about mimi?

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/05/2011 08:55

Minna - which was my grandmother's name - is much nicer. She was abbreviated to Min, on occasion, never Minnie.

CheerfulYank · 15/05/2011 08:59

Sigh...I have the same worries about Peter, which is one of my favorite boy names. 'Round here it's a penis.

IngridBergman · 15/05/2011 12:37

Oh, no way! That's horrible. I would ignore that. No one ever mentioned it round here, and we know two little Peters.

CheerfulYank · 15/05/2011 17:17

It's not on the same level as dick, but it's there. So lovely, too!

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 15/05/2011 17:22

Peter in French means to fart.

IngridBergman · 15/05/2011 18:54

We prefer to think of it in terms of the 'bang' of a firework Smile which it also means.

stuff what it means in France anyway Grin

Boogiemumma · 15/05/2011 20:35

Yep it's a name for ladies bits here too ;)

emmanumber3 · 15/05/2011 22:04

Thank you for all your comments Grin. I think we'll probably go with a non-family name as everything else we've found has either been ruled out or goes too far back to be meaningful (to us anyway).

I think that as the great-grandmother's name was Minnie (whole name) it would be a case of either use it in that form or not at all, and as I really wouldn't be comfortable with calling my DD fanjo, it shan't be used Grin. Some of your suggestions are nice (to me anyway - DH not so keen), like Minerva, but as that wasn't actually her name we may as well go with something we like better but with no family connection. Oh and Minna is my evil aunt I'm afraid so also a no-go Blush.

Had no idea Peter was used for penis Hmm. It's always been a John Thomas in these parts Grin.

I didn't know the fanjo thing for Minnie, I thought of Minnie driver too! In Northern Ireland, Millie is the name of a girl chav.

Suncottage · 17/05/2011 13:15

Fanjo - my little God-daughter was mortified when her Mum got a Mini (car)

"Please don't call it that Mummy!".

Smile
Asinine · 17/05/2011 13:16

Minnie for a girl, willy for a boy Grin

How about Fanny instead? Such a nice name and so underused...

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 17/05/2011 16:55

And if you have another boy, he could be Dick .... :)

emmanumber3 · 17/05/2011 21:08

Funny you should say that, I had an uncle Dick so that's a family name too Grin.
