I was just answering someone about nicknames and it got me thinking how often Isabel/ Isabelle/ Isabella etc. is called Izzy?????
I really don't like it and am worried people would automatically call her that.
Do you know any that has never been called Izzy?

Bella-boo!

Popbiscuit · 12/05/2011 18:47

To my dad, everyone named Isabelle is automatically renamed "necessary on a bicycle".

Seriously though, every Isabelle I've ever known has been called Izzy whether she likes it or not. You might find it grows on you? We almost didn't name our daughter the name we loved because of the nickname but now almost everyone calls her that and we have come to love it as much as we do her.
I always think it's a bit stuffy when people say things like "he's not Matt, he's Matthew" regarding their child's name.

You could have Bella/Belle (but that's also a separate name) or Ellie/Ella/Elle (also separate names), any or all of which might also be the NNs for Annabelle, Arabella, Eleanor, Ellen (and probably others).

Or you could get a touch of the Jilly Cooper's and go for Sable/Sabel.

My cousin has a 2yo DD called Isabelle, shortened to Belle. I think it's much more pretty than Izzy, which sounds quite harsh.

kahlua4me · 12/05/2011 18:50

I am Isabel, and until the last few years have never had it shortened. I like to introduce myself as Isabel but am happy to be called Issy

MollysChamber · 12/05/2011 18:51

If you call her Isabelle other people will too.

AngryFeet · 12/05/2011 18:51

Isabels always seems to get shortened to Izzy and Isabellas get shortened to Bella.

LindsayWagner · 12/05/2011 18:52

My lovely grandmother was known as Ibbie.

AngryFeet · 12/05/2011 18:52

Also my mum hated me being called anything but my full name but of course people at school shortened it as did my Dad and brothers so I don't think just you calling her that name will matter over the years. Very likely to get shortened from school age onwards.

purplearmadillo · 12/05/2011 18:52

I have an Isabella. She has been Bella from day 1 and no one has ever called her Izzy. It just isn't her name. But then, we didn't ever really use Isabella, so no one really had the option to shorten it to anything else.

Northernrose · 12/05/2011 18:55

My neice is Isabelle and has always been Isabelle/Belle/Bella. She has never been called Izzy ever!
beautiful name IMO

KateF · 12/05/2011 18:56

My Isabella is known as Bella-bobs or Bella-boo at home and Isabella elsewhere. I don't personally like Izzy and although school friends use it she doesn't like it (she's 11 btw).

Jaspants · 12/05/2011 19:05

DDs friend is Isabella but has only ever been known as Bella. DN is Isobel and is always known as Issie. However friends DD is Isabelle and as her parents always refer to her as such and pointedly correct anyone who uses anything else, she has survived to the age of 10 with her name intact.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/05/2011 19:08

DD's mates called Isabel or Isabella are either Issy (3)
Or Bella (2)

She is 14 I think it was the most popular name of her peer group.

naffedoff · 12/05/2011 19:14

My DD (7) has nicknamed herself Izzy - even writing it on her schoolbooks etc. I call her either Isabel or Belle, not Izzy.
DH wanted to name her Isabella originally, but I had always wanted Isabel and didn't like Bella as a nickname. However, now I think I would have peferred it to Izzy!

AnonymousBird · 12/05/2011 19:17

Izzy/Issy/Belle/Bella.

Ours is currently Whizzy, but suspect she will grow out of it and want one of the other nns, or heaven forbid, her full name!

I LOVE Ibbie. Not heard that one before.

lemonbeaver · 12/05/2011 19:23

My daughter is Isabelle and we called her issy wizzy when little, she loves being Issy and it really suits her, i didn't/don't personally like Bella as it reminds me of the Tweenies, however i love Ibbie and wished we had thought of that for her, I might start calling her that Wink

GwendolineMaryLacey · 12/05/2011 19:26

The Isobel I know is Isobel and the Isabellas are Bella (child) and Issie (my age)

Chica31 · 12/05/2011 19:30

My DD is Isabel and it is ALWAYS Isabel. Sometimes the Nursery staff call her Isa but not very often. We live in Spain, so of course Spanish friends call her "Esabel" shortened to "Esa"

NimpyWindowmash · 12/05/2011 19:30

What angryfeet said

eurycantha · 12/05/2011 20:30

I look after twins ,one of whom is an Isobel ,in her class there is another Isobel who is always called Isobel We call ours Izzy.

olddeuteronomy · 12/05/2011 21:09

In Scotland among the older generation was often shortened to Tibbie (my gran's name) and have also heard Isa, both of which I think are nice.

BadRoly · 12/05/2011 21:12

My Isabella is known as Bella and derivatives of that (Bells, Belly, Bellsy).

MercurySoccer · 12/05/2011 21:26

Izzy seems to be the most usual by far, then Bella.

manicinsomniac · 12/05/2011 22:26

The ones I teach are a mixture of Isabel (2), Isabella (1), Izzy (3) and Bella (2)

Also love Ibbie, never heard it before.
