Tolomey?

At the height of hyperemesis-induced sleeplessness, I came up with a rather random shortlist for names for our second, due end of July. We have quite a common surname, so I wanted something a little out-of-the ordinary, and something as good as the name we have for DS1 (Adair James Francis). On the list was Tolomey, which I really still quite like. However, my ever so considerate mother has spent no little time in telling me what a terrible choice it would be.

Gettng quite stressed at our inability to agree a potential boys name, I have set DH the task of coming up with his shortlist given that he had rubbished all my attempts. He came down yesterday and, having seen my drug-addled shortlist, suggested Tolomey.

Is it as awful as my Mother suggests, or will she come round eventually?

{grin]at Wordwork.

"Went to school with a Ptolemy, was known as Ptol - His brothers were called Caesar and Saul. All drop dead gorgeous looking they were the coolest kids in school."

Well, so long as you can ensure that your boy is super cool and drop dead gorgeous, then go for it - he'll be able to get away with it. If, however, there is the slightest chance that he'll have a late growth spurt, late puberty, braces, spots, and glasses, then don;t.

Mole007 - what did you decide on the end? I am due on a few weeks time and we have decided on 'Tolomey'. You were right in that there are two ways of spelling this name. Tolomey is a short version of Bartholowmew and 'Ptolemy' was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet etc...

Two completly different names!

Seeker, ya post made me laugh :-)

Yes, two completely different names, but as this thread shows, the vast majority of people will assume you got Ptolemy embarrassingly wrong. :-/

Not a fan, I'm afraid, but Bartholomew is beyond gorgeous!
