Tolomey?

At the height of hyperemesis-induced sleeplessness, I came up with a rather random shortlist for names for our second, due end of July. We have quite a common surname, so I wanted something a little out-of-the ordinary, and something as good as the name we have for DS1 (Adair James Francis). On the list was Tolomey, which I really still quite like. However, my ever so considerate mother has spent no little time in telling me what a terrible choice it would be.

Gettng quite stressed at our inability to agree a potential boys name, I have set DH the task of coming up with his shortlist given that he had rubbished all my attempts. He came down yesterday and, having seen my drug-addled shortlist, suggested Tolomey.

Is it as awful as my Mother suggests, or will she come round eventually?

I agree - spell it correctly - Ptolemy. I like it and think Tolly is a cute nickname. I prefer it to Bartholomew, which sounds a little 'old fashioned'.

It's spelt Ptolemy!

But I do like it!

poppydaisy · 10/05/2011 14:57

Am liking Ptolemy more and more actually Smile.

bronze · 10/05/2011 15:01

Still spelt wrong anyway. Tolomy is short for Bartholomew

seeker · 10/05/2011 15:02

Truly, really don't.

Hullygully · 10/05/2011 15:07

What about Ptoby or Pthomas. Perhaps Ptheodore or Ptimothy?

mathanxiety · 10/05/2011 15:11

I thought Tolly was short for Bartholomew. But it's more likely to be Bart, thought there's an old Irish nn Batty which is charming in its own way.

MelinaM · 10/05/2011 15:21

Ptolemy spelt very obviously the wrong way!!!

mistlethrush · 10/05/2011 15:27

Glad to have caused a bit of merriment Grin

meaning and derivation of Tolly

I'd go with Bartholomew and Tolly for short

GwendolineMaryLacey · 10/05/2011 15:58

"I'd assume you'd heard Ptolemy, failed to look it up and guessed at a spelling."

Me too :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 10/05/2011 16:00

Isn't it Tholly, not Tolly? I've heard of several Thollys but none without the h.

Hullygully · 10/05/2011 16:02

I've always had a soft spot for Trolley

thisisyesterday · 10/05/2011 16:11

yes, i too assumed you had mis-spelled Ptolemy

speakercorner · 10/05/2011 16:22

"I would think it was mis-spelled Ptolemy."

Me too!

I might just think "Ptosser."

Grin
BendyBob · 10/05/2011 16:34

Lol at WordworkGrin.

It is a little bit pretentious, although I do remember a friend's tortoise years ago was called Ptolemy.

Wordwork · 10/05/2011 16:39

It is a very good name for a ptortoise.

campion · 10/05/2011 16:46

Shouldn't it be 'Tholomy' if it's short for Bartholomew? The 'th' is sounded in the name.
Only ever known two - one was / is Barty and the other Tolly.

I'm with your mum.

(Love 'yewneek', DELHI. It could become a name in itself!)

eatyourveg · 10/05/2011 16:59

Went to school with a Ptolemy, was known as Ptol - His brothers were called Caesar and Saul. All drop dead gorgeous looking they were the coolest kids in school.

Achneinmeinbein · 10/05/2011 19:28

Well I think Tolomy is a nice name! Ptolemy annoys me because I want to pronounce the P and it looks redonkulously pretentious. But your spelling - well I did at first thing deliberate/accidental misspell like everyone else but actually think it looks nicer than Pt and has a lovely sound. You might start a trend and make Tol the more normal spelling!

But would seem I'm in the minority on that one...

What about Solomon then you could have a Solly instead of a Tolly.

Wordwork · 10/05/2011 19:35

Ptolemy, Caesar and Saul! They must have been the kings of cool to pull it off. I am in love with them from afar.

Pancakeflipper · 10/05/2011 19:41

Hullygully - I'd presume you've not slept it correctly - it's Ptrolley.

Snorts at Ptarquin. Grin

Pancakeflipper · 10/05/2011 19:42

Anyway Tolomey sounds a fancy sausage.
