Do you say

So - fee- a (emphasis on fee)
So - fy - a

or

Plonkerr · 01/05/2011 22:35

So - fee - ya (emphasis on fee)

littlenuttree · 01/05/2011 22:37

I have a Sophia and pronounce her name as per your first example, although my DM and my FIL prounounce it Sophie-a, despite my best attempts to get them to say it properly, which really annoys me! Grin

runnermum2 · 01/05/2011 22:38

Oh good

I like So-FEE-ya but not so-FY-a or SO-fee-a

So-fye-a

There's also a Sof-ee-a (like the capital of Bulgaria, in both spelling and pronunciation) at DCs school.

sundayschild92 · 01/05/2011 22:42

I too have a Sophia (spelt Sofia) but pronounced as your first example - gorgeous name!

madrush · 01/05/2011 22:50

emphasis on fee - I like the name a lot

Edmundo · 01/05/2011 22:56

So-fee-a

GitAwfMayLend · 01/05/2011 22:57

So-FEE-a

My dd is called Sophia and if anyone pronounces it So-FYE-a she wants to brain them.

Emelene · 01/05/2011 23:18

So-fee-a. It's pretty. :)

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 01/05/2011 23:37

The old-fashioned English pronunciation is So-fye-a. At some point the Latin pronunciation came into favour, and the same is true of Maria which used to be Ma-rye-a. (Mariah Carey has made the old prn. of Maria more familiar.) They can be pronounced either way. Certainly So-fye-a is more unusual these days, but it's just fashion.

MavisEnderby · 01/05/2011 23:39

SO FEE YA

GitAwfMayLend · 01/05/2011 23:44

Someone called my daughter So-FYE-a, I overheard her mutter under her breath 'I don't live in the 18th century you twat' Grin

Folicacid · 02/05/2011 07:26

So fee a

iscream · 02/05/2011 07:27

Sew fee ah

Georgimama · 02/05/2011 13:08

I was just about to start this very thread, so I will hijack it instead (sorry bout that OP)

So if you want your daughter to be called (going to attempt phonetic spelling) so-fee-a NOT so-fi-a how should it be spelled? I think Sophia but the spelling with an F is becoming more common it seems.

LaWeaselIsOupaLaDouffe · 02/05/2011 13:17

If you spell it Sofia people will pronoune so-fy-a IME.

Sophia gets prounounced so-fee-ya (apart from by odd people who struggle with normal name pronounciation...)

Georgimama · 02/05/2011 13:19

Excellent, so a "ph" for me which is what I wanted. I thought it should be because Sophy (or Sophie) is proounced sopheee not sophiiii but these things are never that straightforward!

If DS had been a DD, would have been Zofia (Eastern European name pronounced Zoff-ya), with the nn's Zosia (Zoh-sha) and Zosiu (Zoh-shoo).

Just to confuse the issue add another dimension

PigletJohn · 02/05/2011 14:13

s'FEE-ya

olive12344 · 30/05/2014 10:25

wigglesrock · 30/05/2014 10:28
