Do you say

So - fee- a (emphasis on fee)
So - fy - a

or

Sophie - a (emphasis on So)

My dd3 has the middle name Sophia & we considered it because our dd2 loves watching Sofia the first (Disney prog). But we opted for the ph spelling but are both pronounced the same.
So-FEE-a

sauvignonblacks · 30/05/2014 10:52

I have a So-fee-ya call her Sophie and she'll get very very upset
Was called Sapphire once in the doctors surgery which is just weid

WolfMoon · 30/05/2014 13:12

I have a Sophia, she is So-Fee-A apart from one group of cousins on DH's side who insist on calling her So-Fye-A.

twinjocks · 30/05/2014 17:12

So-FEE-a

There are millions of them around here. 5 in one class in my school, and at least two in most other classes - it's the equivalent of Jennifer in the 1970s!!

Mrsindecision · 30/05/2014 18:51

Blimey, 5 Sophia's in a class? Where are you based twinjocks? I assume that if they are at school they would have been born in 2010 or before, and although the name Sophia is on an upward trend here in the UK, even if you combine the names Sophia and Sofia, there were only around 3000 born in 2010 (fewer for each school year before that), so in theory that amounts to around 0.4% of babies born for that year. This statistically means you would have to have more than 250 children in a group to have more than one Sophia! I do appreciate names are regional though and not distributed evenly!

Mrsindecision · 30/05/2014 19:20

Also, fwiw I don't recall Jennifer being overly popular in the 70s?? Are you based in the US?

Where are you twinjocks?
I can honestly say I haven't met another one with either spelling (SW London)

Geraldthegiraffe · 30/05/2014 19:29

I've met lots of under 5 Sophias. All pronounced So fee a
However my adult friend (late 30s) is very definitely So fy a

I'm not massively keen on either. Prefer Sophie!

Mrsindecision · 30/05/2014 19:46

Jennifer was ranked at number 34 in the UK in 1974 so not really overly popular. It was however ranked at number 1 in the US during the 70s.

BeattieBow · 30/05/2014 21:52

I like So-FYE-a , and actually do know one. Don't know any So-fee-yas or and Sophie's apart from a 30something one at work.

In fact I love it for my mythical next baby. But wouldn't because it would be shortened to Sophie or Soph

susiedaisy · 30/05/2014 21:54

So Fee a

poppydaisy · 30/05/2014 22:44

I know a Sof-eye-a and several Sof-ee-as.

My aunt is a Soph-eye-a, and although she pretty much always goes by Sophy (with the emphasis on the 'o') she gets very peevy if people call her Soph-ee-a. So I'd assume the former. She's not C18th, but she is old fashioned (I think she'd say 'proper').
