It's a bit early on but these are the names we've agreed on so far.

Girl: Persephone May
Boy: Dylan Llewelyn

Both middle names are family names.

I adore Persephone, especially 'Sephy', and have done for several years now (since reading Malorie Blackman), but I know it's high on the pretentious-o-meter.

We are Welsh, so can definitely get away with the boys name!

Do your worst!
Thanks.

Hehe BluddyMoFo..

I know Persephone is a bit marmite! Everyone in my family has said that they like it...

Llewelyn is a middle name anyway so wouldn't really be used.

Are you pronoucing Dylan in the welsh way eg Dull-Ann? Because if not, Dylan (Dillon) is at the other end of the socio-economic spectrum than Persephone.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 20/04/2011 22:13

Dylan Llewelyn is a bit of a tongue twister with all those 'lllllllls' imho. I like Dylan in itself but think another name would go better if you have to have Llewelyn.

WishYouWereMine · 20/04/2011 22:17

My mother has insisted that Dylan is pronounced Dillun. We are SE Wales though, not in a Welsh speaking bit.

Am not particularly worried about the socio-economic side of things. Baby will be who baby is, I don't think either names will limit them particularly. Hope not anyway. I didn't think Dylan was that 'common' (for want of a better word)?

There is definitely only one baby in there, so chances of both names being used is tiny, (would probably change my mind by the time a second baby comes!)

Persephone is lovely in its own right - so pretty don't shorten it. Dylan lovely too! Not suuuuuure about May

suwoo · 20/04/2011 22:24

I love Persephone, but just don't think Dylan is of the same ilk. Llewelyn is fine for me as a (2nd language) welsh speaker in Manchester. I knew it would come in useful one day.

thisisyesterday · 20/04/2011 22:27

Persephone May just sounds really wrong... i like both names, just not together

ValiumBandwitch · 20/04/2011 22:27

Persephone is disgusting. Sounds like a disease. I've got persephone, I'll be off work til the end of the week.

I love Penelope though. Penelope is still unusual if that's what you're after.

Dylan is grand. I like it but not with Llewelyn.

WishYouWereMine · 20/04/2011 22:29

I actually prefer Ioan.. but OH isn't sure. He's more keen on Dylan. What's the verdict on Ioan Llewellyn? I do have a cousin Iestyn with the same middle name, so not sure if it's too similar?

I wanted a one syllable middle name for Persephone, just to sort of reduce the 'pretentiousness'. I have very fond memories of my nanna and she died when I was young so I'd like to remember her in some way.

Persephone May is lovely IMO. How are you pronouncing Ioan? Very difficult for people to interpret that name I think.

WishYouWereMine · 20/04/2011 22:32

PMSL at ValiumBandwitch.. I know it's marmite. Would marmite be better? What do people think of Persephone Pomegranate? Wink

suwoo - yo-un.

PaganOfBologna · 20/04/2011 22:35

How about Ianto?

Persephone isn't terrible, but poor kid will be the last one in her school to learn how to spell her name (not that that will hold her back I'm sure Wink)

WishYouWereMine · 20/04/2011 22:37

PaganOfBologna... OH loves Ianto. But I see it as sort of a comedy welsh name. Do you know me...?

CountHotCrossBapula · 20/04/2011 22:41

Dylan is a fab name but I'm biased

DH and I both grew up in Wales (me South, him North) but are both English so went for the English pronunciation (as did Dylan Thomas, despite actually being Welsh). All the famous Dylans are cool - Bob, Thomas, Moran, the stoned rabbit from The Magic Roundabout ...

DS's MN is James (family name).

PaganOfBologna · 20/04/2011 22:43

Know you ... umm, not that I know of. Though I did live in Wales from many years, so who knows! How come the comedy name, just because of Torchwood? I think it is lovely, and manly actually.

Otherwise Ifan or Trevor. Or how about Inigo, not a Welsh name exactly, but lovely all the same.

suwoo · 20/04/2011 22:43

Not keen on Ioan then, hmm, I prefer Ianto I reckon. Nowt wrong with a difficult to spell name, my dd (now 9) is Madeleine and it hasn't held her back in literacy or anything else.

PaganOfBologna · 20/04/2011 22:43

Oh and forgot to suggest Bryn - now that is a fabulous name

WishYouWereMine · 20/04/2011 22:48

Pagan - I knew a Bryn.. was a bit of a knobber. Am trying hard to avoid names I associate with people.

It's not just Torchwood.. but Taff Wars.. (bizarre youtube series which dubbed over the Star Wars films with versions from the Valleys..) Hmm.. I will think about it though.

Suwoo - How would you pronounce Ioan?

Welsh boys names here

MelinaM · 20/04/2011 23:07

Dull-ann is the correct pronunciation of Dylan, Dill-un is the English version of, and should be spelt Dillon. I'm in South East Wales too WishYou, tis anglicised here ..but then it was England until 1972Grin

Love Persephone MaySmile

WishYouWereMine · 20/04/2011 23:18

MelinaM - The anglicised version is how I would pronounce it, as would everyone around here. I wouldn't mind if someone used the welsh pronunciation. Are you in Monmouthshire? Not too far away.

OK, so I think the verdict so far is that some like them and some hate them. I was sort of prepared for that.
