Help me find a Welsh girls name

Hi all,
Baby due in 3 weeks time (girl, or so the sonographer said) and I'm still umming and ahhing over names. Get terrified with the huge responsibility of it all and end up dithering.
I am Welsh, DH is English, we live in Wales and in the not too distant future hope to move to a more Welsh (speaking) part of Wales. DS is Ioan and would like a Welsh girls name too. Further complicated by our surname being an adjective, with a strong 'Sh' at the start.

DH's current favourites, which I am also considering are:
Nia - too like Mia? Too short? Seems to need a middle name sorted to consider it properly
Rhiannon - love the nickname 'Non', but is it too boring?

Names we liked that have been discounted so far:
Menna - love this but makes a statement with our surname (Men are...)
Seren - don't like it with our surname, and seems to be crazily popular at the moment
Llinos - too Welsh (DH)
Gwen/Gwennie/Gwennon - just went off it (and my nan doesn't like it!)
Eira / Eirwen - meaning snow/white snow - due May, wrong time of year?

Any suggestions? I'm driving myself mad looking through lists

My dd is Gwyneth, but we call her Gwynnie and I still love it!

smellyeli · 13/04/2011 19:54

Elin
Lowri
Gwennan
Mali
Delyth
Eirian
Bethan
Manon
Heulwen

All names of either myself or very close family members! so I love them all Grin

We are just thinking about names for DC3 and want a Welsh middle name that English people can cope with - at the moment it's looking like Bronwen for a girl and Cynwil for a boy. (I like Ceinwen but DH not convinced - he is not Welsh though!)

How about Arionna/Arianna, which means silver apparently? 'Tis gorgeous. Although my friend spells her name Ariona which I prefer.

I don't know how common it is in Wales, but in these parts she's quite unique.

Mabli
Gwenno
Cadi
Beca

MockingbirdsNotForSale · 13/04/2011 20:21

My DD is called Bronwen. We're not Welsh Smile.

Wow smellyeli, never heard Cynwil before. What does it mean? I knew a Cynrig once, he was a nice guy.

I LOVED Myfyr for a boy but DH said it was "too hippyish".

We've got an Alys. But considered:
Bethan - but it was nabbed before we got there
Betsan
Nest
Non
Angharad
Heledd
Arianwen
Esyllt
Gwen
Lowri
Fflur
Carys - but way too similar to Aunty Cerys!
We also had the DH English family.
But I'm mad mad mad that we missed out on Manon! Grrrrr....

maxmissie · 21/04/2011 22:30

Go for Bethan, it's my dd's name, Welsh but easy to spell and pronounce! We live in England, I'm English and both dh's parents are Welsh but he was born in England so not entirely sure what nationality he is! Not so common here but not too different either. Probably a few more in Wales though!

Can only think of a few others which have probably already been mentioned:
Angharad
Helydd - not sure if this is the right spelling, think it's Welsh version of Helen
Morfydd
Ceinwen

moogdroog · 22/04/2011 11:21

Thoughts on Nerys, people?
Think I prefer it to Cerys, but it does make me think of Nerys Hughes in the District Nurse...

Eirlys. Go for Eirlys - it's the best name ever, except Lowri of course Wink

Ffion
Ceridwen
Ceri
Eleri
Eira
Delyth
Nansi
Sali
Alys

FriggFRIGG · 22/04/2011 20:45

how do you pronounce Ceridwen?

ConstanceFelicity · 22/04/2011 20:46

Ker-Rid-Wen.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 22/04/2011 20:54

Love Nerys.

squeak2392 · 26/04/2011 13:40

Oo, I love Aelwen and Arwen!! :)
Not Welsh though, so won't be using them :(

blindmelon · 26/04/2011 17:45

How about Meredith? Ok, ok, I know someone will pipe up and say originally it's a boy's name, but I have a baby girl Meredith and I think it's lovely Grin No problem with English people spelling/pronouncing it either. We call her Merry.

I do think Nerys is lovely too. Or has anyone suggested Eleri?

alicethehorse · 28/04/2011 16:07

Love Nia

Just to update and thank everyone for their help.. Beautiful DD arrived on Friday. Didn't have a name sorted even as we went into theatre but within 10 mins of being born we decided on Eirlys Sylvie (Sylvie after my grandmother). She really suits it.
Thanks again everyone for your help (especially Mejon) - lots of gorgeous names!
