Help me find a Welsh girls name

Hi all,
Baby due in 3 weeks time (girl, or so the sonographer said) and I'm still umming and ahhing over names. Get terrified with the huge responsibility of it all and end up dithering.
I am Welsh, DH is English, we live in Wales and in the not too distant future hope to move to a more Welsh (speaking) part of Wales. DS is Ioan and would like a Welsh girls name too. Further complicated by our surname being an adjective, with a strong 'Sh' at the start.

DH's current favourites, which I am also considering are:
Nia - too like Mia? Too short? Seems to need a middle name sorted to consider it properly
Rhiannon - love the nickname 'Non', but is it too boring?

Names we liked that have been discounted so far:
Menna - love this but makes a statement with our surname (Men are...)
Seren - don't like it with our surname, and seems to be crazily popular at the moment
Llinos - too Welsh (DH)
Gwen/Gwennie/Gwennon - just went off it (and my nan doesn't like it!)
Eira / Eirwen - meaning snow/white snow - due May, wrong time of year?

Any suggestions? I'm driving myself mad looking through lists

I love Bethan! There is a Bethan working on Irish telly and I always wanted her name :)

ConstanceFelicity · 12/04/2011 18:58

Be careful of Welsh baby name sites- I am a Welsh speaker and I swear somebody just picked them out of the dictionary... I saw an American one with the Welsh word for torture (Artaith) on there- Defo not a name!

You should call her Manon. That is the nicest name on earth ;)

A lovely and underused Welsh name is Mai- May in Welsh. Stick that with a nature name in the middle- Mai Haf, maybe (May Summer), Mai Awel (May Breeze) or Mai Awen (May Muse).
Catrin is lovely.
Gwenllian.
I loved going through Welsh flower books looking for names when I was pg. :)

I have a Welsh friend called HAFWEN which I think is a beautiful, soft but strong name.

my name is Bethan Grin, glad you like it! ( Its pretty common amongst people the same age as me though and it can cause problems when we all share a common surname too.......................)

AnonymousBird · 12/04/2011 19:14

I love Ffion.

I had actually wished I was Welsh when DD was born just to use it.

JemimaMop · 12/04/2011 19:20

We live in a Welsh speaking part of Wales. My DD is called Carys Angharad, if the boys had been girls they would have been Manon Fflur and Ffion Medi.

I really like Sian, Bethan, Manon and Tirion. My sister was called Ceridwen, but always preferred to be known as Ceri.

ConstanceFelicity · 12/04/2011 20:51

Ceridwen is a fantastic name :)

MelinaM · 12/04/2011 21:00

Ffion is lovelySmile

moogdroog · 12/04/2011 21:16

Oooh really like Tirion! DH is worried it's too unusual.
Love Manon, but it's been vetoed...
Ffion is nice, but always reminds me of William Hague's wife..

I love your username moogdroog. Reminds me of heady times pre-dc Wink

Staceroo · 12/04/2011 21:24

We too are struggling with a girls name. Would really like a Welsh one. I'm English but dh is Welsh and we've recently moved back to Wales.

We were almost set on Arwen, but MIL pointed out that anything beginning with A does not work with out surname! So ruled out!

Also need to consider my useless English family who you struggle to pronounce anything too difficult!

Fab suggestions on here though, going to run them past my dh later!

PaganOfBologna · 12/04/2011 21:27

Tyrion is excellent, as is Taryn

Enfys, Gwawr, Lowri, Mabli, Nest, Gwenno?

sausagerolemodel · 12/04/2011 21:30

My DD is called Tirion (which means "gentle"). I also love Angharad.

Takver · 12/04/2011 21:34

I love Nia - does it really matter that it's short? Its also very easy for English speakers to pronounce of course. Efa is also pretty IMO (though also short).

Catrin is a good name, but certainly round here it is awfully popular (I know several sets of Catrin/Rhys siblings).

pickledsiblings · 12/04/2011 21:35

Mali is Welsh for Mollie and I think it's lovely.

Fuzzywood · 12/04/2011 21:39

I'm Welsh and DH English, had our second DC 10 weeks ago, DS so didnt use our girls names, which were Anwen or Ariana (my DD's name is on your not to use list). I live in England and in laws are English so it was important to find something they can pronounce, may be important in your case too?
