Do you suit your name? If not, which name would you have instead?

You know how it strikes you as incongruous when you meet a Scarlett who is all quiet and mousy, or an Eileen who is super-glam or a Traci-Jayne who is writing a PhD....? No? Just me then Blush

I always think, 'blimey, she's much more an Emma than an Ashanti'.

My own name (Old Testament, relatively uncommon but very recogniseable) is, y'know, okay. I don't hate it, and it could be worse. But I sometimes don't think it's me. I don't think that people ever look at me in the street and think, "Now she is definitely a notanumber." They are probably too busy gasping in awe at my incredible beauty and supermodel figure to consider the matter.

FWIW it gets a mixed reaction on here though no-one ever seems wild about it. (Totally not bothered by that. Totally not. Couldn't care less. Bitches)

I reckon that the name I actually most 'suit' is probably Shakira Elizabeth.

Which is the name which most suits you? This is different to the name you wish you were called or the name you like most, so forget about Deliah-Flame, ok? The name which most suits you

I'm a Sophie and although I do love it I think it could have been a little more fiery like Bodecia or Scarlett or Tempest.

mrsravelstein · 07/04/2011 11:25

great question! unfortunately i have no idea what name suits me, my own quite pretty french name was so unusual in the early 70s (though i now hear it quite a lot in the playground) when i was growing up that i think i sort of grew into it.

TobyLerone · 07/04/2011 11:31

I am called by my full name by most people at work, but everywhere else I am called 'Kiki'. My nephew christened me this when he couldn't say my name, and now all of my family and friends have adopted it. I will use it to introduce myself outside of professional situations, and I am always introduced as Kiki by other people. I think it suits me very well.

It's actually very weird to me when people outside of work call me by my full name. I don't really know if it suits me. I was never supposed to be called this anyway. I was supposed to be Erin. But my dad made such a fuss that my mum let him name me.

BaggedandTagged · 07/04/2011 12:03

I think I do suit my name, but if I had to be called something else, I think I'd make a good Emma, Anna or Kate.

helendigestives · 07/04/2011 12:31

Friends say I look like a Bethany; I think I could have been an Eleanor too. However, I do suit my real name.

whysolate · 07/04/2011 12:37

I like my name, although it is very traditional (and making a come back I believe). If I could change it I would be called Aiden. ( I am girly so think I would be able to carry off a boys name Grin)

AliSheedy · 07/04/2011 12:39

I have a very unusual, difficult to pronounce foreign name (thanks mum!).

I have no idea what name 'suits me', but at least five times in my life (maybe more) people have mistakenly called me Gabriella (which sounds nothing like my name). So I must look like a Gabriella. Very odd!

Psammead · 07/04/2011 13:28

People tend to call me Jennifer. It happens a lot. It is not my name.

TobyLerone · 07/04/2011 13:30

I think you look like a Jennifer, Psammead, despite knowing what your actual name is :)

MelinaM · 07/04/2011 13:41

I know what you mean notanumber! It's funny how we associate names with professions/looks/personalities etc... Just this last week my friend at uni has been advised to "use her middle name..." "...should you want to be taken seriously in the legal profession"! Her name is Jasmine, mn ElizabethGrin

My name is Sara, but I'm always being told that 'I'm a Charlotte', I think the name that would suit me most would be my mn: Elizabeth, namely LibbieSmile

thumbwitch · 07/04/2011 13:48

My name is plain and classic - and probably suits me, although I hated it when I was growing up. It's not Jane, btw. Although lots of people think it is - some of them because they know my family and others just utterly randomly.Hmm
And I'm not a vegetarian either, but apparently I look like one. People who have only just met me think I am one; and people who have known me for years mistakenly remember me as being one. Hmm.

Need to work on my projection skills, I think.

tryingtoleave · 07/04/2011 13:49

My name is associated with blonde ditzes. Together with my surname, I have been told it sounds like a movie star's name. But I am a mousy intellectual Sad. I used to think I should have been an Eleanor, but tbh I don't really dwell on it much anymore.

pinkgirlythoughts · 07/04/2011 14:04

I really don't like my name, never have, although people often tell me it's pretty. I was going to be a Kate, and I wish my parents had stuck with it, I think it would suit me far better than my actual name. It's not just me who thinks so, either, my mum recently told me she still thinks Kate would have been a better choice!

Psammead · 07/04/2011 14:11

I think that in every single job I have ever had, I have at some point been called Jennifer. In one memorable case, almost every day by an old boss.

I frickin' hate the name Jennifer!

I don't think I suit my name too much though. I did for a short while in my smart-and-intellectual 20s but not any more as a clapped-out mum. It's Victoria.

If I had to choose these days I would be a Catherine, nn Kitty.

notanumber · 07/04/2011 14:30

thumbwitch it's funny, isn't it? I am a vegetarian, and people always seem disproportionately affronted when they discover this: 'you don't look like a vegetarian'. To be fair, my fur stole and crocodile skin boots may have thrown them off the scent.

I also don't look like a smoker, apparantly. Which I'm not. But I used to be. And I get all huffy when people are shocked by this. I mean, I'm totally cool and edgy and femme fatale like - I totally look like I'm a smoker.

Psammead, you do look like a Kitty. This is a good thing.

I asked one woman, who had me down as a vegetarian within half an hour of meeting me, why she thought I looked like one. Apparently it was something to do with the long unkempt-looking hair, pale skin and lack of obvious make-up. The eternal student look might have been a bit of a contributory factor as well although that was slightly at odds with the random lite-hippyness of the hair and nudeyface look. Grin

cumbria81 · 07/04/2011 16:23

I have an acquaintance whom I am always convinced is vegetarian - he just has this quality. I never cease to be surprised when I see him tucking into meat.

mrsravelstein · 07/04/2011 17:53

nobody's ever mistaken me for a vegetarian, but people mistake me for being TALL all the time... (i'm 5'2") .... as in, somebody i've known for a long time will happen to stand right next to me and then suddenly they'll say "bloody hell i never realised you were so short", or somebody i've known for years will be talking about something pertaining to tall people, like, say, the difficulty of buying long enough trousers, and then they'll be incredibly surprised when i point out that this is not something that's likely to trouble me. (i am quite loud, so perhaps that gives the impression of tall-itude?)

UndiscoveredApprentice · 07/04/2011 18:10

I have a name typical of the decade I was born. I wish I was a Claire, no idea why lol!

shrinkingnora · 07/04/2011 18:12

Psammead - I think you look like a Zoe. Based entirely on the fact that you look like my mate Zoe... Are you ever Tor? Which I think is a cool nn for your name.

I think I should be a Lucy.

pinkthechaffinch · 07/04/2011 18:18

I've recently been called Harriet and Margaret, neither of which is my name

Am trying not to think too hard about what this means I look like tbh. Sad

Becaroooo · 07/04/2011 18:20

My name is ok

I am pretty sure you can guess it from my nn!! Grin

I would love to be an Elizabeth or Elinor though....I really wouldnt suit anything exotic - got a face like a spot welders bench and a broad derbyshire accent Blush

Psammead · 07/04/2011 19:29

I can live with Zoe!

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 07/04/2011 21:00

I saw someone at school today and it reminded me of this thread, a new family to the village have very traditional names and the mum just looks like a Harriet or a Georgina so I was surprised to hear her name was quite an unusual modern name :)
