You know how it strikes you as incongruous when you meet a Scarlett who is all quiet and mousy, or an Eileen who is super-glam or a Traci-Jayne who is writing a PhD....? No? Just me then

I always think, 'blimey, she's much more an Emma than an Ashanti'.

My own name (Old Testament, relatively uncommon but very recogniseable) is, y'know, okay. I don't hate it, and it could be worse. But I sometimes don't think it's me. I don't think that people ever look at me in the street and think, "Now she is definitely a notanumber." They are probably too busy gasping in awe at my incredible beauty and supermodel figure to consider the matter.

FWIW it gets a mixed reaction on here though no-one ever seems wild about it. (Totally not bothered by that. Totally not. Couldn't care less. Bitches)

I suppose I probably do. My name was a very popular name 10, even 15 years before I was born. But I'm old fashioned in some ways.

I think if I were going into the witness protection programme I'd choose the name Rachel. It's a good strong attractive name and I don't know how anybody could disklike the name Rachel. I know a couple but not loads. I do like other names that are rarer but I like them for children more than for my own age.

I was going to be a Sarah, but my Mum changed her mind in the hospital. I think I would've suited Sarah.

My mum wanted at one point to call me Melody. SO glad she didn't! I think if I were to give myself another name it would be Anna.

My mum chose my name because she thought it was pretty in a 'hippy' sort of way, unfortunately these days I feel my name sits somewhere between American Cheerleader and Stripper. It was quite unusual when I was growing up. My dd has quite an old fashioned name so when we're introduced people often think my name is my dd's and vice versa

My dad wanted to call me Julia after The Beatles Song. I often think it would be cool to have been a Julia, Jules and to be able to say I was named after John Lennon's mum.

I'm often mistaken for a vegetarian as well. I seem to have inherited some hippyness I just can't shake off!

Skinit - Eek! You got me!! :) No I'm not a Candy. I'm an Amber. When I was in my teens it was used in every American teen rom com going. Clueless particularly stands out. I'm not so bothered about it now though!

When I was 9 my teacher told me in front of the whole class that she didn't think I suited my name (Catherine).

I was devastated as the previous year had a Catherine who looked completely different to me and it was obv that was what the teacher was getting at.

I really like the sound of Lindsay! And in my opinion it's pretty without being all weak and girly. lin zee. Definitely a pleasing sound. I'll be honest, I think it looks odd written down. One of the few names that if a parent told me their dd was linzy, I wouldn't think ofgs kre8tyv spelling! I'd just think,yeah, Linzy. That's the way to go really.

I love my name. My name is Kate, not Katherine, just Kate, and it suits me perfectly.

When I was in primary school, I remember wishing I had a more unusual fanciful name. My best friend at the time was Francesca, and I wanted her name, but as an adult I love Kate.

I had this discussion with my best friend, Jane. She also wanted a trendier name as a child, but as an adult she loves her name.

I think some names date stamp you, IYSWIM? My name was incredibly common in the late 70s/early 80s, but you couldn't imagine a baby girl with my name now.

My parents were going to call me Sarah-Louise, but decided against it, thinking it was too popular! I wish they had, Sarah has never dated.

I don't like my name much (think it sounds like a man's name and rather ugly), but do like the abbreviations that friends tend to apply to it. Am thinking of starting to introduce myself to new people by one of these abbreviations; perversely, they sound even more like a man's name, but (I think/hope) in a way that implies that I've deliberately chosen to be known by the name rather than be struggling under the ugly original. And I imagine it might be an icebreaker: 'That's unusual', 'Yes, well people always end up calling me it anyway so I thought I might as well introduce myself with it!' etc.

I am a hopeless romantic though and have a tiny quantity of Welsh blood, and in an ideal world would be Rhiannon.

My first name is dated, unattractive and (not surprisingly) not popular.

My middle name is beautiful and classic - not my first name as 'too common' at the time. It's mentioned above. I've been mistakenly called my middle name by people who don't know what it is iyswim on many occasions.

This makes me feel that I am beautiful rather than dated, which is good.
