Am new to this but have been observing the threads for inspiration! We currently have ds and dd and am pregnant with dc3 - only 15 weeks so time yet but like to be prepared. We are sorted for girls names but struggling with boys - and am convinced it is a boy based on my two VERY different pregnancies! Ds1 is called Henry. We love traditional names and I don't mind popularity but would rather avoid top ten. I love the name Hugo but want different initials for Dcs so have ruled it out- this is our shortlist, along with my reservations.... None of them stick out like Henry did :-( opinions and suggestions welcome :-)

George - dh suggestion, not mad keen, too popular for my liking and know of about three families with "Henry and George"

Charles/Charlie - dh again likes v much but is one if ds' middle names (as it's a family name) and also v v popular

Frederick - a family name, like a lot, popular around us. Less concerned about that than whether Freddie a bit "twee"... Not sure I like Fred and wondering about when he is older

Wilfred - was on our shortlist for dc2 who turned out to be dd. Think I really like it (!) but mire different and need to get my head round the playground test. Like wilf, wilfie and Freddie... But is it too old fashioned?

Thanks!

Edward
Alexander (top 20 though)
Bertie (Albert/Egbert/Bertram/Bertrand)
Philip
James
Richard

I do like Wilfred and would use the nn Freddie for it - not so keen on Frederick itself.
Charles/Charlie - I know entirely too many of these.

Everybody I know with a Henry also has a George!!

How about John? Really not that popular these days!

blueberrymoon · 05/04/2011 15:22

Hi, I like George and Wilfred. Love the meaning of Wilfred - 'peace'. What's your daughter called, if you don't mind me asking? Love Henry, and I'm nosy! :)

thumbwitch · 05/04/2011 15:24

Thomas is another good choice but also popular and probably in top 20.

cosytoesandfingers · 05/04/2011 15:30

Thanks for opinions and suggestions. Daughter is Beatrice - known as Bibi and beebs! Which rules out Bertie etc.

Re George, that is my feeling too... Henry and George go but v cliched. Henry and Beatrice rules out William too else we sound like we are completely copying the royal family!

Dh won't have Edward, which I do like. Alex was name of ex so that is out too unfortunately.

Oh and Thomas really doesn't go with surname but I do like too!

James
Arthur
Samuel
Oliver
I think George and Charles (Charlie) go best.

pinkypig · 05/04/2011 21:23

Our first was Henry Charles, our 2nd Felix Vivian! Good Luck.

Stanley
Albert (Albie)
Hector
Leo
Louis
Arthur
Ralf
Ronnie
Fred

Frederick is a great name and I don't think Freddie is "twee" as long as you have Frederick on the birth certificate.

George is a nice name, but as you say, a bit predictable with Henry. Charles/Charlie - I think the same applies. Not keen on Wilfred, yes I think it's old-fashioned.

Clary · 07/04/2011 00:54

I like all your choices tho I would agree Charlie a bit popular (one in most classes etc).

Other options:
Arthur
Albert
Alfred (could be Alfie or Freddie)
Fraser
Miles
Edgar/Edwin
William (agree a bit royal tho!)
Stanley
Sidney
(both my DSs' names on this thread so you are on my wavelength Grin)

Michael

ElenStone · 07/04/2011 02:38

I like James too :)

cosytoesandfingers · 07/04/2011 19:34

Thanks for all th suggestions. James, John and Oliver are out due to already being close family members. Can't have anything ending in an "s" or a "ce" as sounds ridiculous with surname....really does make likfe terribly tricky! I really really like Ptolemy but it is so unusual and haven't dared even approach DH with this as a potential!!

jade80: I LOVE LOVE LOVE Monty. DH has very sadly exercised his "power of veto" on that one though as he can't stand it....

Which would people go for out of Arthur, Frederick or Wilfred??? Do you think of any of them as more "old man" than the others? Any of them more classic than the others?

TIA

Arthur

You obviously have the same taste in names as me! I have a Henry, and an Arthur and this baby will be either Fred or Albert (Bertie) My Arthur gets called Arty, Art or Arthur; most people seem to love the name. My nephew is Wilfred, nn Wilf, and I may well have opted for that instead of Arthur if I had been able to-it's a great name imo. However, I do hear a lot of -ve reaction to it; I would say its a bit more controversial than Arthur, and less commonly used.

What's your dd called (I need inspiration!)

Jx

Clary · 07/04/2011 21:02

cosytoes I like all those three Grin

Arthur is nice.

So is Frederick. If nicknames are an issue, IME Arthurs are usually Arthur; Fredericks are always Freddie or sometimes Fred.

But you can also IME set a child's nickname to an extent; I know a lot of Thomases, mostly Tom, but one friend has a Thomas who is always Thomas.

Greenwing · 07/04/2011 21:17

Of those three, Arthur.

I know a Henry with a brother called Nathaniel?

I love Arthur too, but again am biased
Am following this thread with interest though as I also have similar taste in names and am currently expecting DC3!

faeryguide · 07/04/2011 23:16

I love Arthur too! Our dd would have been Arthur if she'd have been a boy.

Frederick and Wilfred are pretty similar (Fred/Freddie) and although Wilfred is more unusual it's doesn't feel much different to Alfred/Alfie to me and I really like that name too.

tiptoptally · 07/04/2011 23:32

I know two Henry's, who have brothers called Benedict, Alfie (named way before it got so popular!!), Jake and Archie.

I REALLY don't like Arthur or Wilfred, but love Frederick/Fred/Freddie.

My suggestions are Ronald (Ronnie), Malachy, Joseph, Evander,Laurence or Vincent.
