Boy names similar to Douglas or Gordon?

I like Douglas and Gordon for a boy but my partner has pointed out the nn issue (I didn't realise, but Gordon -> Gord-o!?)

He votes for John, which I am unsure about - boring? solid and traditional?

The surname is a 3 syllable Mac name

I have gone through the usual lists, baby books etc and am stumped. I would like a name to jump out and announce itself but it doesn't seem to be likely (due in a month and no boy names yet, lots of ideas for girl names.)

I think they're great: but then they're both DH's names, so I'm biased! Go with it, unusual yet traditional

Surely John becomes Johnnie or Johnno just as Douglas becomes Doug or Douggie?

Are you anti nn in general or are you just anti Gordo? What's wrong with the Douglas nns - i think they're great!
If you're anti nn then you really have v few choices. DS1 is Leo and no one has come up a nn for him other than that he calls himself Leo Meo.

A friend of the family has just had a boy and called him Jura . When DS2 was born my midwife's son was called Oban.

I think Douglas and Dougal are great. I am assuming you are in Scotland? I have never come across a child called Gordon down south here - it's a bit of a snigger name to be honest (to adults, esp my generation who might think of 'Gordon is a Moron' but that won't be known among the 'young') My cousin is married to a Gordon shortened to Gord, but they are in Canada!

Hamish (ds's middle name after my Scottish grandad) is my fave. I wanted it for his first name but dh didn't. I don't think it would be shortened to Hammy, more likely Hame, Hames or Hamie.

There's a little boy at my mums and babies group called Scott, which is rather nice. Also a Rory.

Just to clarify, I know nn and contractions are inevitable but would want to avoid some of the obvious derogatory nn. "Gordon's a moron" being an example (that I didn't already know of!) I dunno but e.g. "Hank's a w*" sort of thing. Lydia (teapot), Siobhan (your coat) can be funny or annoying. Sure you can't anticipate them all but it's good to get others' knowledge on that . I did hear somewhere that boys' nn are more likely to be about the names or physical appearance while girls' nn are usually about their character.

What are your nn concerns for Douglas? Doug is a thug? Seriously though, really not that bad as school-yard taunts go.

Douglas is lovely - but I also like Doug and Dougie.

Angus, Alexander, Alistair, Hamish also similar and nice.

I know three baby Jon/John/Jonathans though - think it's nice but not as unusual as others have suggested.

I totally love the name John.

My 2 chaps are called magnus and conan - both nods to their scottish heritage.

BTW, magnus tells me that he gets 'magnet' at school, which he likes as he is a physics boffin!

Showing my age with the 'Gordon is a Moron' - Google it - Jilted John had a big hit with it around 1978!
